Clarksville TN is a Red River (Cumberland River) cruise port and city in Tennessee USA (Montgomery County). By population (around 150,000) the city is ranked state's 5th-largest (after behind Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga). Clarksville is approx 70 km (45 mi) northwest of Nashville (Tennessee state's capital city).

The town was founded in 1785 (by East Tennessee colonists) and incorporated as city in 1807. It is named after George Rogers Clark (1752-1818) - an US militia officer (general) and hero in the American War of Independence (1775-1783). Fort Campbell KY (home of US 101st Airborne Division) is approx 16 km (10 mi) from downtown, located on the Tennessee-Kentucky border.

The city developed rapidly during the 19th-century with main industries Cumberland River shipping trade (by steamboats) and agriculture (large plantations producing tobacco, cotton, corn, flour). Agriculture produce was exported (along the rivers Ohio and Mississippi) to New Orleans and Pittsburgh PA. The first bridge over Red River (linking Clarksville with New Providence NJ) was opened in 1829. In 1828 was opened the Clarksville-Hopkinsville Turnpike road. In 1859 was opened the Clarksville-Louisville Railroad.

Current-day city's economy is based on major industrial companies like Agero Inc (connected vehicle, roadside assistance), Akebono Brake Industry Ltd (Japanese manufacturer of components for cars, motorbikes, trains, industrial machinery), American Standard (plumbing fixtures manufacturer), Bridgestone Corporation (Japanese manufacturer of auto and truck parts), Fort Campbell KY (US Army base), Google LLC, Hankook Tire (South Korean manufacturer), Jostens (US memorabilia printing and publishing), LG Corporation (South Korean manufacturer of electronics, chemicals, telecom products), Nyrstar Clarksville (zinc refinery), Trane Inc (US manufacturer of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment), Vulcan Corporation (US manufacturer of rubber, plastic and foam products).

As cruise port, Clarksville TN is included in the regular schedule of the USA's largest river cruise company - ACL-American Cruise Lines. Next table shows Queen of the Mississippi/American Heritage ship's 7-night/8-day itinerary between homeports Nashville and St Louis, with prices from ~USD 3000 pp (double occupancy rates).

At a Glance

Independent sightseeing: Easy for McGregor Park, the Cumberland RiverWalk and historic downtown. A taxi, rideshare or organized excursion is preferable for Dunbar Cave State Park and Fort Defiance.

Clarksville is a compact Cumberland River port suited to a relaxed half-day visit. Riverboats normally dock at McGregor Park, close enough to reach downtown on foot, although the climb from the riverfront may be tiring for passengers with limited mobility.

Getting from the Riverboat Landing

River cruise vessels normally dock rather than tender, usually at the McGregor Park boat ramp or another landing along the park. Follow the ship's directions because the precise gangway position can vary.

  • McGregor Park and RiverWalk: Immediately accessible from the landing.
  • Historic downtown: Approximately 0.8–1.2 km (0.5–0.7 mi) away, depending on the gangway position and route.
  • Customs House Museum: Approximately 1.5 km (0.9 mi) from the riverfront landing.
  • Transport: Taxis and app-based rides should be arranged with enough time for the return journey. Local buses are less convenient for a short port call.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

RiverWalk and Historic Downtown

Allow 2–3 hours. Begin with the paved Cumberland RiverWalk, then continue uphill into the compact downtown district. Franklin Street has historic commercial buildings, public art, local shops and places for lunch or coffee. Downtown Commons and the exterior of the Roxy Regional Theatre fit naturally into the route.

This is the easiest independent option. The riverfront is generally level, but the connection into downtown involves an uphill section.

Customs House Museum and Cultural Center

Allow 1.5–2 hours inside, plus walking time. The museum occupies a distinctive 1898 building and combines regional history, art, changing exhibitions and a large model railway. It can be added to a downtown walk without requiring transport.

Check the day of operation before leaving the ship: the museum is normally closed on Mondays and major holidays, with later opening on Sundays.

Fort Defiance Civil War Park

Allow 1.5–2 hours including transport. Fort Defiance preserves earthworks on a bluff about 61 m (200 ft) above the meeting of the Red and Cumberland rivers. The interpretive center and viewpoints provide useful context on Clarksville during the Civil War.

The site appears close across the river but is not a convenient extension of the downtown walking circuit. Use a taxi, rideshare or ship excursion rather than attempting the steep and indirect walk.

Dunbar Cave State Park

Allow 2.5–3.5 hours including transport. The park is roughly a 10–15-minute drive from downtown and has more than 4.8 km (3.0 mi) of woodland trails, Swan Lake and a large cave entrance.

Entry into the cave is permitted only on a guided tour, normally offered seasonally from May through September. Advance reservations are important, and the underground tour is not wheelchair accessible. Without a reservation, visitors can still walk to the cave entrance and use the park trails. Arrange dependable return transport before visiting independently.

Self-Guided Riverfront and Downtown Walk

Distance: Approximately 3.2 km (2.0 mi) round trip
Pure walking time: 45–55 minutes
Recommended total time: 2–3 hours
Difficulty: Easy to moderate; paved paths and city sidewalks, with an uphill section from the riverfront.

  1. McGregor Park landing: Start beside the ship and follow the riverfront path through the park.
  2. Cumberland RiverWalk: Walk along the water for river views and photographs of the vessel.
  3. Upland connection: Follow the pedestrian route uphill toward the historic downtown district.
  4. Public Square: See the central civic area and surrounding historic buildings.
  5. Franklin Street: Continue past shops, murals and the Roxy Regional Theatre.
  6. Downtown Commons: Pause in the public square before continuing south.
  7. Customs House Museum: Visit the museum if it is open, or view the elaborate historic exterior.
  8. Return to McGregor Park: Retrace the downtown route and descend to the riverfront, allowing extra time on wet or hot days.

Passengers wanting a shorter outing can remain within McGregor Park and complete its approximately 1.6 km (1.0 mi) walking trail without climbing into downtown.

Practical Tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes; downtown stands above the river and requires some uphill walking.
  • Riverfront paths can be affected by high water, heavy rain or temporary closures.
  • Confirm museum, interpretive-center and cave-tour schedules for the date of the call.
  • For attractions outside downtown, book the outbound and return rides with a generous margin rather than relying on an immediately available vehicle.
  • Plan to be back near the landing at least 30 minutes before the ship's stated all-aboard time, or earlier if instructed by the cruise line.
