Cornwall is a St Lawrence River cruise port and city in Ontario Canada (SDG/United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry) with population around 50,000. Cornwall ON is situated where the Canadian provinces Ontario and Quebec converge with the USA's New York (Massena's Rooseveltown neighborhood).
Seaway International Bridge (length 542 0ft / 1652 m) crosses the Saint Lawrence River and consists of two spans over the River/Seaway - South Channel Bridge (1958-opened) and North Channel Bridge (2014-opened, connecting Cornwall with Cornwall Island part of the Mohawk Territory/Mohawk Nation at Akwesasne). Ten Cornwall Island is connected to Rooseveltown via the Massena-Cornwall International Bridge.
Located equidistantly between Ottawa (Canada's capital, approx 64 mi / 103 km to the northwest via highway ON-138N) and Montreal (Canada's second-largest city, approx 70 mi / 114 km to the northeast via highway ON-401E). Cornwall is also part of the CN Kingston railway linking Toronto with Montreal. In Cornwall ON are the headquarters of SLSMC (St Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation/Authority, 1998-established Canadian nonprofit organization) which oversees the inland waterway and its shipping traffic. SLSMC also manages and operates the Crown's assets along the Seaway, including lands, canals and locks (13 of all 15) between Montreal and Lake Erie.

The town was founded in the late-18th-century (1784) and named after England's Duchy of Cornwall (1337-founded, owned by the eldest son of the current British monarch/titled Duke of Cornwall).
Exploring Cornwall
Cornwall’s waterfront parks, heritage sites and downtown cafés suit a relaxed cruise call. Independent sightseeing is practical with some planning or transport: the central waterfront is easy to explore on foot, but confirm your ship’s landing point before assuming you can walk directly into town. Upper Canada Village is the main excursion option outside the city.
Getting Ashore
Berthing and passenger access should be checked with your cruise operator. Do not assume that Cornwall Harbour, Marina 200 and the Lamoureux Park waterfront are interchangeable arrival points, or that a shuttle will be provided.
For local sightseeing, the Cornwall Civic Complex at 100 Water Street East is a useful starting point. Lamoureux Park, the Riverside Trail and downtown Pitt Street are close together here. Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Waterfront and Downtown
Allow 2–3 hours for Lamoureux Park, river views, historical plaques and a stroll along Pitt Street for shops or lunch. The central route is mostly flat, with paved park paths and urban sidewalks. This is the simplest independent option once you reach the Civic Complex area.
Cornwall Community Museum
The museum occupies the historic Wood House in Lamoureux Park and makes an easy addition to a waterfront walk. Allow approximately 30–45 minutes for its local-history displays. Check opening arrangements for your call date; if closed, continue with the park and outdoor heritage plaques.
Upper Canada Village
This living-history attraction near Morrisburg has costumed interpreters, working trades and historic buildings depicting rural life in the 1860s. Allow 2–3 hours inside, plus approximately 30–40 minutes by road each way from central Cornwall. A visit therefore needs roughly 4–5 hours ashore before adding your return margin.
An organized excursion is recommended for straightforward transport. Independent travel is possible with a prearranged vehicle and confirmed return pickup. Expect substantial outdoor walking, some uneven surfaces and steps into buildings. Check the seasonal daytime schedule before booking; special evening events may not fit a cruise call.
Lost Villages Museum
At Ault Park near Long Sault, this collection of relocated heritage buildings explains the communities displaced by construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Allow around an hour at the museum, plus transport. It suits a shorter outing by prearranged taxi or an organized local tour. Confirm seasonal opening and building access before setting off.
Self-Guided Walking Route
Lamoureux Park and Pitt Street
Start and finish: Cornwall Civic Complex, 100 Water Street East. This route begins in the sightseeing area rather than at an assumed cruise berth.
- Civic Complex waterfront: join the riverside path for views across the St. Lawrence River.
- Lamoureux Park: walk west through the park, stopping at the Clock Tower and selected heritage plaques.
- Cornwall Community Museum: visit the Wood House if open, or view its exterior.
- Historic courthouse and SDG Jail: return east toward the buildings on Water Street West. Treat these as exterior stops unless a jail tour is confirmed.
- Pitt Street: head north through downtown toward Second Street, pausing for shops, coffee or lunch.
- Return to the waterfront: retrace Pitt Street to Water Street and return to the Civic Complex.
Distance: approximately 2–2.5 km (1.2–1.6 mi), depending on park detours. Pure walking time: 35–45 minutes. Recommended total: 2–3 hours with stops. Difficulty: easy, mostly flat, with road crossings downtown. Allow additional time for any transfer back to your ship.
A Longer Waterfront Walk
The Riverside Trail provides an off-road route beside the river and former Cornwall Canal. For a flexible nature break, continue west from Lamoureux Park, walk for 30–45 minutes and return along the same path. This adds roughly 1–1.5 hours without requiring a distant pickup.
The trail is shared with cyclists. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water; exposed waterfront sections can be windy, and summer walks may be hot.
Practical Tips
- Choose either a relaxed Cornwall visit or Upper Canada Village as your main plan; combining several out-of-town attractions can leave little spare time.
- Confirm museum opening days and any guided-tour availability for your actual call date.
- Prearrange return transport for attractions outside town rather than relying on finding a taxi there.
- For a local outing, aim to reach the ship or designated return pickup at least 60 minutes before all-aboard. Allow a larger margin after an out-of-town excursion.
