Getting from the Cruise Landing

River cruise ships dock at a landing on the town side of the Danube, near the Ruderhaus and Edlmairstraße. Passengers go ashore by gangway rather than tender. The passenger landing is separate from Deggendorf’s commercial cargo port.

From the usual landing, follow Edlmairstraße and the boulevard toward the center. The edge of the old town is approximately 10–15 minutes away on foot; allow around 15–20 minutes to reach the main squares. You do not need to cross the Danube to visit the old town.

A shuttle or public bus is generally unnecessary for central sightseeing. If walking is difficult, ask the ship to arrange a taxi and confirm the pickup point. Check your actual berth before setting out, since these directions apply to the usual passenger landing.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Old Town, Churches and a Café Stop

Allow 2–3 hours for Luitpoldplatz, the Old Town Hall, Oberer Stadtplatz and the surrounding lanes. Look for the baroque tower of the Heilig-Grabkirche, the surviving town wall and the Knödelwerferin fountain. Shops and cafés make this an easy, flexible outing, with no transport required.

The center is mostly level, although some streets have uneven paving. Church interiors depend on access and services; the route remains worthwhile if you only view the buildings from outside.

Local Museums

The Stadtmuseum and Handwerksmuseum stand opposite one another in the cultural quarter, a short walk from the main squares. Choose the Stadtmuseum for local history or the Handwerksmuseum for traditional trades, tools and craft displays.

Allow approximately 45–75 minutes for one museum, or around 2 hours for both. This is a practical addition to an old-town walk in poor weather. Both normally close on Mondays; check opening arrangements for your call date.

Danube Promenade and Donaupark

For a quieter outing, spend 1–2 hours walking the promenade and Donaupark. Continue to the pedestrian and cycle bridge for river views, then return along the same bank. Crossing the bridge is optional and adds walking time.

This is an easy independent option on mostly level paths. Watch for cyclists and expect exposed stretches beside the river, particularly in windy or hot weather.

Geiersberg Church and Woodland Views

Active walkers can continue beyond the center toward Mariä Himmelfahrt church and uphill to the Geiersberg pilgrimage church and nearby woodland viewpoints. Allow roughly 1–1.5 hours extra beyond an old-town visit.

This is a moderate outing with uphill walking and uneven woodland surfaces. Wear shoes with grip and shorten the walk if paths are wet or icy. The riverside is the easier choice for passengers who prefer to avoid climbing.

Old Town Loop from the River Landing

Distance: approximately 3–3.5 km (1.9–2.2 mi), depending on your berth and detours. Pure walking time: around 50–65 minutes. Recommended total: 2–3 hours, excluding a full museum visit. Difficulty: easy, with mostly level pavements, some uneven paving and road crossings.

1. Passenger landing: Leave the riverside via Edlmairstraße and follow the boulevard toward the old town.
2. Luitpoldplatz: Begin with the broad lower square and its colorful building fronts.
3. Heilig-Grabkirche: Make a short stop to see its prominent baroque tower.
4. Old Town Hall and Oberer Stadtplatz: Continue through the central squares; the Tourist Information is in the Old Town Hall.
5. Knödelwerferin fountain and town wall: Explore the Altstadtviertel lanes and the surviving section of medieval wall.
6. Cultural quarter: Continue to the Stadtmuseum and Handwerksmuseum around Östlicher Stadtgraben and Maria-Ward-Platz. Visit one if time permits.
7. Return to the landing: Head back toward Luitpoldplatz, then retrace the boulevard and Edlmairstraße to the river.

For a shorter walk, turn back after the main squares. Keep the river landing marked on your map rather than navigating to the commercial port.

Excursions Beyond Deggendorf

Metten Abbey

Metten Abbey is a nearby excursion for passengers interested in its church and ornate baroque library. The library is accessible only on a guided tour, so confirm a suitable tour before arranging transport.

Allow a half-day window for travel, the visit and a return buffer. A prearranged taxi with a confirmed return pickup can work independently; an organized excursion is simpler when coordinating the library visit with a short call.

Bavarian Forest

Deggendorf is a gateway to the Bavarian Forest, but mountain trails and national-park attractions are separate destinations requiring road travel.
