Easter Island (officially Isla de Pacua) is located in the South Pacific Ocean, about 2200 mi (3500 km) west of mainland Chile (South America). The island is of great archaeological importance and is famous worldwide with its nearly 600 large-head moai statues ("moai") gazing over the ocean. They vary in height from 10 to 40 ft (3 to 12 m) and are carved from volcanic rock.

Discovered by the Dutch in 1722, Easter Island was first named Paaseiland (translated as "Easter Island") and was taken over by Chile in 1888.

The island has a total area of 163,6 km2 (63,2 mi2) and population around 6,600. The nearest inhabited land is Pitcairn Island, at approx 2075 km (1290 mi) to the west. The nearest town is Rikitea (on Mangareva Island, Gambier Islands, French Polynesia, population around 500) located approx 2606 km (1620 mi) to the west.

Islanders are referred to as pascuense (in Spanish). However, it's common to refer to the members of the indigenous community as "Rapa Nui".

Besides tourism (including by cruise ship passengers), the island's other businesses are commercial fishing and farming.

Easter Island is served by the Mataveri Airport. LAN Airlines (domestic airline) offers regular and direct flights to Santiago Chile, Papeete (Tahiti, French Polynesia) and Lima (Peru).

There is a marine shipping service to Valparaiso port (Santiago, Chile).

Hanga Roa is the island's port town with population around 3,500 (~90% of the total population). The town features the Avenida Atamu Tekena avenue, lined up with many guesthouses, hostels and luxury hotels (total capacity around 600 beds), stores restaurants, internet cafes. The town also features a museum, a Roman Catholic church, a multi-use stadium, Estadio de Hanga Roa, which is the home ground of the Easter Island football team.

Wood was scarce on the island during the 18th-19th centuries, but several highly detailed and distinctive carvings found their way to world-famous museums.

In 1995, Easter Island was designated a UNESCO Site, with much of its territory protected within Rapa Nui National Park.

Easter Island Chile cruise terminal

Cruise ships to Easter Island dock (anchor) at Hanga Roa - port town on the southwestern coast.

Easter Island (Rapa Nui) is best explored on a prearranged guided tour if your priority is the major moai sites. Hanga Roa offers a simpler alternative: waterfront walking, local shops and nearby coastal viewpoints.

Organized excursion recommended for the main archaeological highlights, which require transport and an accredited guide. Easy independently for central Hanga Roa once ashore.

Getting Ashore and Around

Cruise ships anchor offshore and bring passengers ashore by tender. Hanga Piko is a commonly used landing near Hanga Roa, but the actual landing depends on sea conditions and the ship’s arrangements. Confirm your arrival point before arranging a private pickup.

Ocean swell can delay tendering, shorten the visit or prevent landing altogether. Avoid planning around the ship’s scheduled arrival time as though it were your time ashore.

From Hanga Piko, allow roughly 20–30 minutes to walk into central Hanga Roa. A landing at the town’s smaller waterfront harbor puts you closer to the center. Walking is practical locally, although pavements are inconsistent and some stretches involve roadside walking.

For sights outside town, arrange a vehicle and guide in advance. Taxis can handle local journeys and agreed excursions, but a driver is not necessarily an accredited park guide. Do not build a tight cruise itinerary around public transport or finding a return taxi at a remote attraction.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Rano Raraku and Ahu Tongariki

For a first visit focused on the moai, prioritize the quarry at Rano Raraku and the row of 15 restored statues at Ahu Tongariki. Together they show both the carving process and the scale of the completed ceremonial platforms.

Allow approximately 5–7 hours ashore for a guided outing with transport, depending on additional stops. Add Anakena only if your actual landing time and final tender allow it. Rano Raraku involves sloping, uneven paths and exposed walking; this is not simply a drive past the statues.

A ship excursion or a private accredited guide accustomed to cruise calls is the most practical arrangement. Agree beforehand how the route will be shortened if tendering starts late.

Rano Kau and Orongo

A shorter guided outing can combine the volcanic crater of Rano Kau with Orongo, the stone ceremonial village associated with the Birdman tradition. The appeal here is the crater scenery, coastal views and cultural setting rather than large groups of standing moai.

Plan approximately 3–4 hours with vehicle transport from Hanga Roa. Expect uneven paths, exposed viewpoints and potentially strong wind. Driving up preserves sightseeing time; the uphill hike is a substantial addition to a limited port call.

Hanga Roa Waterfront and Town

Choose Hanga Roa if you prefer an independent visit or have only a short period ashore. Explore the fishing harbor, follow the coast past Pea and Hanga Vare Vare, and browse the shops along Atamu Tekena. The Holy Cross Church is another worthwhile stop if open.

Allow 2–3 hours for a relaxed walk with a café or shopping stop, plus the journey from your tender landing. Tahai, farther north along the waterfront, is a possible extension for coastal moai views. Confirm current access requirements locally before entering the archaeological grounds.

Anakena Beach

Anakena is the main choice for a sandy beach visit, with palm trees and nearby moai platforms. It is across the island from Hanga Roa, so it requires a planned transfer rather than a walk from the landing.

Allow approximately 30–40 minutes by road each way and around 3–4 hours overall for an unhurried beach outing. Arrange the return pickup before leaving town. Swimming depends on conditions that day; do not assume the bay will be calm.

Confirm the distinction between beach access and entry to the archaeological areas, including any ticket or guide requirements. For a first short call, a brief Anakena stop may fit better within a guided island tour than as a separate beach excursion.

Self-Guided Hanga Roa Walk

Fishing Harbor, Coastal Views and Town Center

Start: Caleta Hanga Roa, the town-center fishing harbor. If your tender lands at Hanga Piko, first walk or take a taxi here.

  1. Caleta Hanga Roa: Begin with the fishing boats and waterfront views.
  2. Pea waterfront: Follow the coast south for views of the rocky shore and surf.
  3. Atamu Tekena: Turn inland to the main shopping street for local crafts and refreshments.
  4. Holy Cross Church: Continue toward the church; enter only if open and services permit.
  5. Hanga Vare Vare: Return toward the coast for open sea views.
  6. Caleta Hanga Roa: Follow the waterfront back to your starting point.

Distance: approximately 3 km (1.9 mi), depending on detours. Pure walking time: 45–60 minutes. Recommended total: 1.5–2.5 hours.

Difficulty: easy overall, with gentle gradients, uneven surfaces and intermittent pavements. This route stays around town rather than entering the main controlled archaeological sites. If returning to Hanga Piko, allow another 20–30 minutes on foot and keep a separate margin for the tender queue.

Park Entry and Practical Tips

  • Arrange park access beforehand: the main controlled sites require a Rapa Nui National Park ticket and a guide accredited by Ma’u Henua. Confirm whether your excursion includes the ticket. Rano Raraku and Orongo each permit only one entry per ticket.
  • Check local access rules: do not assume that a publicly accessible beach or coastal path gives unrestricted access to adjacent archaeological grounds.
  • Protect the sites: stay on marked routes, respect barriers and never touch or climb the moai or ceremonial platforms.
  • Prepare for exposure: bring water, sun protection, a light rain layer and shoes suitable for volcanic ground. Shade is limited at many stops.
  • Plan around the final tender: confirm its time and departure point before leaving the landing. For private outings, aim to return to the landing area at least an hour before the last tender, with more margin if the ship advises it.
  • Keep plans flexible: changing swell can affect landing operations even in otherwise pleasant weather. Follow the ship’s latest instructions throughout the call.
