Enderby Island NZ (New Zealand) is one of the Auckland Islands and is located in close proximity (2 mi / 3 km) to Auckland Island's northeastern coast (Port Ross / natural harbour). Enderby is the largest in the Auckland archipelago (subantarctic island group). In the strait between Auckland and Enderby are located several smaller isles, including Rose and Ewing.
Enderby Island NZ is not to be confused with Enderby Island WA (in Western Australia's Dampier Archipelago). The island's scenery is marked by a rocky coastline with high cliffs and bog and wetland interior with with numerous streams, Teal Lake (southeastern part). Cruise ships anchor at Sandy Bay (southwestern coast) which is Enderby's only landing point. The area is best known for the New Zealand sea lions (Phocarctos) breeding colony.
Enderby Island is a designated Important Bird Area as a breeding site for several seabird species, among which are the endemic Auckland shag (cormorant), Auckland teal (dabbling duck), Auckland rail (flightless bird) and Auckland snipe (sandpiper/shorebird). Besides New Zealand sea lions, on the island live brown skuas (Antarctic skua), New Zealand pipits (passerine birds), northern giant petrels (large predatory seabird), yellow-eyed penguins (aka hoiho / tarakaka).
In 2020, The Snares were included in the schedule of Ponant's 2018-built superyacht Le Laperouse.

Exploring Enderby Island
Independent sightseeing limited: Enderby is a protected subantarctic nature reserve visited through an expedition operator’s permitted landing programme. There is no town to explore or local transport to arrange. Your choices depend on the expedition team’s plans, permitted access, wildlife and weather.
The main experiences are watching New Zealand sea lions at Sandy Bay, walking across the island to the northern cliffs, and joining a longer coastal hike. Choose one main walking activity rather than expecting to fit everything into a short landing.
Landing and Getting Around
Ships remain offshore and passengers transfer by Zodiac to Sandy Bay. This is a shore landing rather than a cruise-terminal arrival; the team selects the precise landing point according to sea conditions and wildlife. Getting out onto rocks or the beach requires more balance and mobility than using a pier.
All movement ashore is on foot. Follow the expedition team’s designated routes and group arrangements. A boardwalk makes the cross-island walk more straightforward, but the landing approach, wet surfaces and exposed conditions still require care. Wind, swell or sea lions occupying the access area can delay or prevent a landing.
Best Ways to Spend Your Landing
Sandy Bay Wildlife Watching
A shorter visit around Sandy Bay suits passengers who prefer wildlife observation to a sustained hike. Allow roughly 1–2 hours if offered within the landing programme. Watch the sea lion colony from the position selected by your guides, with possible sightings of yellow-eyed penguins and other coastal birds.
This is the least demanding shore option, although uneven ground and moving sea lions can complicate access. Sandy Bay is a wildlife site rather than a recreational beach. Penguin access corridors must remain clear; stop only where directed.
Boardwalk to the Northern Cliffs
For many visitors, this is the most practical main walk: a return journey from Sandy Bay through sheltered vegetation and open megaherb country to an exposed seabird coastline. Southern royal albatross may be seen near the route, with light-mantled albatross around the cliffs.
Allow approximately 3–4 hours with frequent observation stops, subject to the team’s turnaround time. The boardwalk reduces the need to cross boggy ground, but this remains a moderate outing in wet or windy conditions. Return by the approved route to the Sandy Bay Zodiac pickup.
Long Coastal Circuit
Organized excursion recommended: choose the longer circuit only when explicitly offered by the expedition team. It adds coastal scenery and wildlife habitats beyond the boardwalk, but involves rough ground, mud and potentially tall tussock.
Expect a substantial outing, often around 5–6 hours with wildlife stops. Route length and pace vary, so use the briefing’s assessment rather than treating it as a fixed-distance trail. It is best suited to confident walkers able to maintain the group’s pace; convenient early exits should not be assumed.
Zodiac Wildlife Cruise
If offered, a guided Zodiac cruise provides views of basalt cliffs, kelp beds and coastal birds with less walking. Some expedition programmes combine cruising with a shorter landing. Availability and duration depend on conditions, and boarding the boat and sitting in cold, exposed conditions still require consideration.
Practical Tips for the Call
- Complete the operator’s biosecurity checks and clean footwear, clothing and equipment as instructed before landing.
- Wear waterproof outer layers and the footwear specified by the expedition team. Carry warm layers and protect cameras from rain and spray.
- Keep wildlife routes clear, maintain the instructed viewing distances and let guides manage encounters with sea lions.
- Confirm arrangements for drinking water, food and toilet needs before leaving the ship, especially for a long hike.
- Follow the shore team’s turnaround and final Zodiac instructions. Allow time for wildlife delays and boarding rather than planning around the ship’s advertised departure time.
