Eureka CA (port locode USEKA) is a city in California USA (Redwood Empire region, Humboldt County), located approx 430 km (270 mi) north of San Francisco and approx 160 km (100 mi) south of Oregon state's border. The urban area has total area 48 km2 (19 mi2) and population around 45,000.

As cruise port, Eureka CA is visited by smaller-sized ships and superyachts, from ultra-luxury travel brands like Silversea, Seabourn, RSSC-Regent Seven Seas, Scenic, Oceania.

Eureka is the biggest coastal city between Portland Oregon and San Francisco. It is the regional center for trade, government, and health care on the USA's North Coast north of the San Francisco Bay Area. Greater Eureka is also ranked one of California's major commercial fishing ports. It is also the biggest deepwater port between Coos Bay and San Francisco - a stretch of ~800 km (500 mi).

Eureka's Humboldt Bay (on the Pacific Ocean) is the main port zone with several piers and wharves serving predominantly fishing vessels. In the mid-19th century, the town originally developed on salmon fisheries (along the Eel River), processing mainly cured fish and smoked salmon. With the fishing industry soon was also developed shipbuilding.

Today, Humboldt Bay houses the West Coast USA's biggest oyster farms. Eureka's 100+ fishing boats are homeported at two dedicated marinas with ~400 slots) plus a marina in Fields Landing (with berthing capacity ~50 boats). Along with salmon, today are also processed tuna, crabs, shrimps.

The town played a major role in the West Coast lumber trade. Eureka is a state historical landmark having hundreds of Victorian-era buildings, including the Old Town's Carson Mansion (1886-built, currently owned by the private Ingomar Club). Here is also the Sequoia Park Zoo - California's oldest zoo (1907-opened), covering land area of 2 hectares/5 acres.

Eureka offers Victorian architecture, a working waterfront and redwood forests on California’s Humboldt Bay. Old Town is the natural focus for a relaxed visit, while Sequoia Park provides a chance to experience redwoods without a longer excursion outside the city.

At a Glance

  • Best for: historic streets, independent shops, local museums and redwood scenery.
  • For a shorter visit: explore Old Town and the waterfront, with a museum or café stop.
  • For more time ashore: combine Old Town with Sequoia Park and the Redwood Sky Walk.
  • For a longer excursion: consider a guided trip to the region’s larger redwood forests, allowing for transfers and the ship’s all-aboard time.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Schneider Dock on Humboldt Bay has hosted cruise calls, but passengers should confirm their ship’s actual arrival point and shore arrangements. Do not assume that the gangway opens directly into Old Town or that a shuttle is provided.

Before leaving the ship, check the permitted route out of the dock, available transport and return arrangements. Old Town is convenient to explore on foot once there; Sequoia Park and attractions outside Eureka are better planned with transport.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Old Town and the Waterfront

Eureka’s historic commercial district has restored Victorian buildings, galleries, bookshops and independent stores. Explore Second and Third Streets, then head to the boardwalk for views of Humboldt Bay and the working waterfront. This is a flexible choice for passengers who prefer sightseeing without a fixed tour schedule.

The Eureka Welcome Center at 108 F Street is a useful stop for maps and local advice.

Carson Mansion

At the eastern end of Second Street, Carson Mansion is one of Eureka’s most distinctive Victorian buildings. It houses a private club, so plan an exterior viewing from public areas rather than an interior visit.

Clarke Historical Museum

In Old Town, the Clarke Historical Museum explores Humboldt County’s history, including Native American cultures and the Victorian period. It makes a useful indoor addition to a waterfront walk. Check opening arrangements for your port day.

Sequoia Park and the Redwood Sky Walk

Sequoia Park has forest paths, picnic areas and redwood scenery within Eureka. The adjoining Sequoia Park Zoo provides access to the Redwood Sky Walk, a series of elevated walkways through the trees. Sky Walk admission is included with zoo admission; the surrounding city park is a separate experience.

The main Sky Walk route has no stairs and is designed for wheelchair access, although the optional adventure section is not accessible. Visitors using mobility devices should check the operator’s guidance. Adverse weather can close the attraction.

A Cruise on Humboldt Bay

The historic Madaket offers guided bay cruises departing from the foot of C Street. This can add a maritime perspective to an Old Town visit, but departures are seasonal. Confirm the operating schedule, ticket availability and return time before booking.

Self-Guided Old Town Walk

Allow roughly two to three hours for this suggested outing, including browsing and a short refreshment stop. This is sightseeing time within Old Town; add your ship-to-town transfers separately.

  1. Begin at the Welcome Center on F Street: collect a map and check which museums and businesses are open.
  2. Explore Second and Third Streets: look for Victorian façades, galleries and independent shops.
  3. Continue east to Carson Mansion: view the building from public areas.
  4. Return toward the central waterfront: enjoy a boardwalk stroll and views across Humboldt Bay.
  5. Add one optional stop: visit the Clarke Historical Museum or pause for lunch before returning to your arranged pickup point.

Shorten the walk to the central Old Town blocks if time or mobility is limited.

Redwood Shore Excursions

For a forest-focused day, look for excursions to Humboldt Redwoods State Park and the Avenue of the Giants, south of Eureka, or Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park to the north. These involve longer road transfers than Sequoia Park and are better suited to a longer port call.

Compare the actual itinerary carefully: a scenic drive, a short grove walk and a longer forest hike offer different experiences. Check walking surfaces, accessibility, meal arrangements and the scheduled return. Avoid combining distant forest areas into one independent outing unless the available time clearly supports it.

Practical Tips

  • Dress in layers: bring a windproof or waterproof outer layer for the bayfront and forest visits.
  • Wear supportive shoes: forest paths may be damp or uneven.
  • Check opening days: museums, seasonal cruises and attractions may not operate throughout every port call.
  • Plan transport both ways: arrange your return before heading beyond Old Town, especially for out-of-town excursions.
  • Follow ship time: leave a generous margin before all-aboard, including time for dock access and any required transfer.
