Gambsheim is a Rhine River cruise port and town in France's Grand Est region (Alsace's Bas-Rhin department, Haguenau-Wissembourg district), with population around 5,000. The 71-km / 44-mi-long Strasbourg-Lauterbourg (Worth-Strasbourg) railway and the parallel A35 (Alsacienne motorway) pass through Gambsheim and connect to Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate state. Strasbourg City is approx 15 km (9 mi) to the south.

The 1974-completed Gambsheim Barrage (hydroelectric dam) has France's largest locks and is used for electricity generation and for reducing Upper Rhine's flow rate. The barrage consists of two locks, a hydroelectric power plant, a fish pass/fishway, a France-Germany road connection (to Rheinau). Approx 25 km (16 mi) downstream (on the German side, in Freistett) is the Iffezheim Barrage that consists of 6x lock-gates, powerplant, road crossing, fish ladder/fishway (for migratory fish species), cyclist bridge (Europe's longest aluminum bridge, 2019-opened, part of EuroVelo 15/Rhine Cycle Route connecting Andermatt, Switzerland, with Hoek van Holland, Netherlands).

The Gambsheim Rhine powerplant (framed by the barrage's two islands) is equipped with 5x bulb turbines (total power output 141 MW) and has annual capacity ~650 million kWh. The powerplant is joint-operated - by France (Centrale Electrique Rhenane de Gambsheim, subsidiary of Electricite de France) and Germany (Energie Baden-Wurttemberg AG). The income from both powerplants (Gambsheim and Iffezheim) is divided between both companies.
