Glengarriff is a small port town / village in County Cork, Ireland, with population under 1,000. It is located on Beara Peninsula and connected via N71 national secondary road. Port's importance as a waypoint along Castletownbere-Cork fish-delivery route declined in recent years.
Town's economy is based on local services, farming and tourism featuring as travel destination plenty of natural attractions. Glengarriff is surrounded by high mountains pocked with marshes (many farmed for peat). The nearby forest shelters the glen (long valley with sloped concave sides) which gave town's name (translated as "rough glen"). It contains some of Ireland's oldest birch and oak groves. Bamboo Park (located behind Toad Hall) is an outdoor leisure area with a kids playground, lagoon (Blue Pool), Barley Lake, the historic Eccles Hotel.
Best-known tourist attractions also include Ilnacullin's Italian Gardens (on Garnish Island) visited on boat tours. Island's Martello Tower provides a great view of the surroundings. Among the most popular tourist activities are scenic boat cruising and kayaking (in Glengarriff Bay), walking (along nature trails), evening live music performances with traditional Irish pub entertainment (particularly during summer season), restaurants, shops, even art galleries.
