Harlingen is a Wadden Sea cruise port and city in the Netherlands' Friesland province, with population around 16,000. Friesland's cities (in brackets their Frisian names)) by population are Leeuwarden (Ljouwert), Drachten, Sneek (Snits), Heerenveen (Hearrenfean), Harlingen (Harns), Dokkum, Franeker (Frjentsjer), Joure (De Jouwer), Wolvega (Wolvegea), Lemmer (De Lemmer).
Harlingen has several docks (havens) now partly used by leisure boats and cruise ships, including Zuiderhaven (used by yachts and sailing boats). Harlingen also has a new fishing port and small shipyards rebuilding yachts. Ferry connections are available to the West Frisian Islands (northern Netherlands) Terschelling and Vlieland.
Harlingen is visited mainly by river cruise ships (including from the fleet of Arosa Cruises) and also by smaller ocean-going luxury cruise ships. With the 2018-opened cruise pier (read more in the "Terminal" section) Port Harlingen expects around 40 cruise ship calls annually, The floating pier project cost around EUR 3 million.
The town received its city status in 1234. Its current-day economy is based on agriculture, shipping, sea fishing and tourism. Approx 8 km (5 mi) south of Harlingen begins the Afsluitdijk dike separating Wadden Sea from IJsselmeer (closed off the inland bay in the central Netherlands).
Since late-Middle Ages (5th-15th centuries), Friesland is renowned for the exceptional height of its inhabitants - deemed among the tallest Indo-Europeans.

In March 2018 was inaugurated a multifunctional floating pier (Wilhelmina harbour) with length 160 m (525 ft). The new pier significantly boosted the local cruise ship tourism industry allowing berthing for both ocean and river passenger ships.
The new facility provides faster and easier embarkation / disembarkation as it rises and falls with sea tides. The new pier is also used by bruine vloot (traditional Frisian passenger boats with flat-bottom hulls), as well as by sailing river clippers and hotel barges.
