Port Melilla (Spanish Morocco) serves mainly ferries from mainland Spain (Motril, Malaga, Almeria). Together with Ceuta, Melilla is one of two Spanish cities in on the northwestern African coast classed as autonomous territories of Spain.

The largest ferry companies serving Spanish Morocco are BALEARIA, TRASMEDITERRANEA, NAVIERA ARMAS, and FRS Iberia.

In 2024, Melilla Port’s cruise shipping traffic increased from ~4,000 passengers (2023) to 9,000+ (2024). In 2027, the Port expects 80,000+ annual cruise tourists, escalating to ~150,000 in 2030, and plans to be able to handle 130+ cruise ship calls annually.

In 2013, Port Melilla handled nearly 1 million tons of cargo, of which mainly general cargo (93%), 35,800 TEU-containers, 146,600 vehicles, and 783,595 ferry passengers. Tax-free goods can be purchased in the harbour area.

Ceuta and Melilla were free ports before 2011, when Spain joined the EU. The city has population around 80,000, most of whom are Iberians (Andalusians and Catalonians). Morocco continues to claim both cities, plus Perejil Island and other African territories. Spain's position is that Ceuta and Melilla are parts of Spain (not a colony), being established in the 15th century before Morocco was founded as a country.

The city is served by Melilla Airport with regularly scheduled domestic flights (by Air Nostrum) to Spain (Malaga, Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Almeria, Granada, Badajoz), the Canary Islands (Las Palmas) and Majorca Island (Palma de Mallorca). Since 2013, Melilla Airlines has offered direct flights to Malaga. Three roads connect Melilla with Morocco but clearance is required when passing through border checkpoints.

Melilla cruise terminal

Melilla Port has four ferry terminals, including the exclusive Balearia Terminal Marítima Melilla. The other three terminals are managed by the company Edificio Estacion Maritima de Melilla/ETM (Melilla Ferry Terminal). ETM manages both ferry and cruise shipping operations (facilities and services).

Regularly scheduled ferry services from Melilla to Malaga (travel time 6,5 hours) are provided by the companies BALEARIA (6 weekly crossings) and TRASMEDITERRANEA (7 weekly crossings).

Regularly scheduled ferry services from Melilla to Motril (travel time 5-6 hours) are provided by the company ARMAS (6 weekly crossings).

(NEW) Melila Marina Cruise Terminal

In July 2025, the Mexican company ITM Group signed a 25‑year concession deal with the Port Authority of Melilla to construct a dedicated cruise terminal alongside the Mineral Loading Dock and to refurbish 10 adjoining commercial premises at Noray Marina.

The family‑owned company intends to invest ~EUR 2 million in these developments.

The Cancun-based ITM Group specializes in real estate developments, hospitality and cruise ports, bringing 30+ years of port management experience and 50+ years in infrastructure development. Its Caribbean portfolio spans prominent cruise port facilities such as Mexico's Costa Maya, Dominicana's Taino Bay/Port Puerto and Port Cabo Rojo, and Honduras' Roatan Port.

Legally, the venture required resolution of an operator exclusivity that (since 2010) had granted ETM sole rights over passenger services in Melilla. Under the new arrangement, For this project, ETM transfered its rights exclusively pertaining to cruise shipping traffic (at the Mineral Dock, and on an exceptional basis at the Northeast‑2 and Northeast‑3 docks for larger vessels) to ITM’s subsidiary company Melilla Dock Terminal/MDT.

The concession covers a space of ~1470  m2 (across the 10 commercial units) and an additional 463 m2 designated for the cruise terminal building. Terminal's completion is scheduled for the summer of 2026.

In its initial phase, the project will refurbish long-unused premises to accommodate restaurants, souvenir shops, and basic passenger services. The new passenger terminal is planned as a modest, one-storey building adjacent to the historic dock.
