Melun is a Seine River cruise port and town in France's Ile-de-France region (Seine-et-Marne department) with population around 40,000. The town is approx 40 km (25 mi) from downtown Paris City.
The town is served by Gare de Melun (train station) which is also an interchange on the RER D line (part of Transilien Line R) and RER (Reseau Express Regional/Regional Express Network) - a hybrid of commuter and speed railways that serve Paris City and its suburbs. Transilien Line R interlinks Paris-Lyon-Melun-Montargis, Paris-Lyon-Melun-Fontainebleau-Montereau, and Melun-Hericy-Montereau.
The settlement was established during the Roman Empire and named Meledunum. Melun's best-known tourist attractions are Collegiale Notre-Dame de Melun (The Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame/early-11th-century), Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte (17th-century palace considered a smaller version of Chateau de Versailles /France's royal residence between 1682-1789), Eglise Saint-Aspais de Melun (16th-century church), Priory Saint-Sauveur (10th-century building on Saint-Etienne Island), Botanical Garden (on Saint-Etienne Island).
The town produces the Brie de Melun cheese (similar to Brie de Meaux). In 1945 here was established EOGN (Ecole des officiers de la Gendarmerie nationale/National Gendarmerie Officers School) with The National Gendarmerie Museum (inaugurated in 2015).
As cruise port, Melun was first included in the 2022 schedule of one of the world's largest river cruise companies - CroisiEurope. Next table shows "The Meandering Seine" (6-night itinerary) that was scheduled for the CroisiEurope riverboats Seine Princess, Botticelli, and Renoir.
