Oarai is a port town in Japan's Ibaraki Prefecture (central-eastern Honshu Island) facing the Pacific Ocean. The town has population around 17,000 and total area approx 24 km2.
Onuki received town status in 1894, and in 1954 merged with the nearby Isohama. In 1955 was amalgamated part of Natsumi. Town's economy is based on nuclear research, agriculture (main products being rice, sweet potatoes and radish), commercial fishing (whitebait, sardines, flounder, clams), seafood processing (salted and dried horse mackerel, smelt, sardines, boiled octopus).
Via Oarai Kashima Line, trains connect Oarai with Mito and Kashima. Japan National Route 51 (national highway) connect the town with Mito, Chuo-ku and Chiba.
