The settlement (as Upper Shawneetown) was established by the Shawnee Indians in the mid-18th-century. The area of the current town was the site of the Battle of Point Pleasant (aka Battle of Kanawha/October 10, 1774) between Virginia militiamen and two Indian tribes (Shawnee and Mingo). Following the battle, the settlement was renamed Camp Point Pleasant. It was fortified in the late-18th-century and incorporated as town in 1797, making it one of the oldest on Ohio River.

The town's current-day economy is based on transportation and coal production. The best-known tourist attractions are Eastham House (aka Glenn Manor/1850-built residence), Lewis-Capehart-Roseberry House (aka Roseberry/1820-built, 2-story residence) and the Point Pleasant Monument State Park, which are listed in the USA's National Register of Historic Places.
