Porto Ercole is a port town in Grosseto Province (Tuscany, Italy), with population around 3,000. This resort town is on the eastern side of Monte Argentario promontory, approx 40 km (25 ml) from Grosseto, 7 km (4 ml) from Orbetello and 12 km (8 ml) from Porto Santo Stefano.
- The town was first mentioned in 1296, when the countess of Savona, Margherita Aldobrandeschi (mid 13th century) ordered the building of Torre di Terra tower - the oldest building in Porto Ercole.
- The Italian painter Caravaggio (1571-1610), died here from fever on his way from Naples to Rome and was buried in a local church.
- In the latter half of the 20th century, the Dutch Royal Family had a summer residence here.
- Porto Ercole was once linked via rail to Orbetello (small railway to Santo Stefano) closed in 1944. The former station (Terrarossa) was 4 km from the town,
