Surabaya is the principal port and the capital of Indonesia's East Java Province. By population (around 3 million / metro over 9,6 million) the city is ranked Indonesia's second-largest (after Jakarta). The seaport (Tanjung Perak) is on Madura Strait (Java Island's northeastern border) and one of the oldest in Southeast Asia. Surabaya City is also one of the country's four metropolises - together with Jakarta, Medan and Makassar. Surabaya is a modern center for agriculture, trade, manufacturing, shipping.

Tanjung Perak Port (locode IDSUB) is the city's main port and one of Indonesia's busiest cargo ports. Much of the handled cargoes are transhippments and mainly via container carriers/boxships. In 2015, Port Perak was dredged to max depth 14 m (46 ft), and in 2016 the harbor's max draught was increased to 16 m (52 ft) allowing the port to accommodate larger boxships with max capacity 15,000 TEU-containers.

Also in 2016 was completed a dry-bulk port with 250 m (820 ft) piers/docks. The new dry-bulk terminal occupies 26 hectares plus a supporting 36-hectare area, for a total cargo capacity ~20 million tons.

Surabaya is alleged to have been established on the spot where the legendary battle between a crocodile (BUAYA) and a shark (SURA) took place, Surabaya has been the chief harbour and commercial center of East Java since the fall of the 14th century (Majapahit Kingdom). Most of Surabaya's current population (~90%) are Muslims. In Surabaya, cruise tourists can see the Bull Races, visit Madura Island or take a volcano tour.

Suramadu Bridge (its name derives from Surabaya-Madura) connects Madura Island and Surabaya over Madura Strait. A 16 km highway was built from Suramadu Bridge to MIS-C (Madura International Seaport-City) in Pernajuh village, Kocah district, Bangkalan, Madura (project cost Rp 60 billion / USD 7 billion). The container port was built in order to ease the burden on the overloaded Surabaya's Tanjung Perak Port.
