The town was established in 937 AD. It was first documented as Ugliche Pole (Corner Field) in 1148. Its name is thought to refer to the nearby turn in Volga River.

Town's center features the traditional Kremlin, plus other samples of old Russian architecture, of which particularly notable are the monasteries Resurrection and Alexeievsky. The Assumption 3-tented church (1628) of Alexeyevsky Monastery is a true gem of Russia's medieval architecture. Located close by is the more conventional Church of Saint John the Baptist (1681).

Closer to the river's bank, cruise ship passengers can see the Resurrection Monastery with its large cathedral, belfry, refectory and summer church. All of these buildings stand in a row and date back to the 17th century (1674-1677). Opposite the Resurrection Monastery is the Church of the Nativity of St John the Baptist (1689-1690) built by a local merchant to commemorate the site where his son had drowned.
