Upernavik is a port town in Qaasuitsup (northwest Greenland), located on the small-sized Upernavik Island. The town has population around 1,200, ranking it Greenland's 12th-largest. Upernavik Island was formerly known as Woman's / Women's Island.
Upernavik is the furthest north which any Norse artifacts have been discovered. The town marks the northern limit of Viking exploration. Due to its small size, everything is "downtown" and walking distance away. Main tourist attraction is Upernavik Museum.
The town is served by Air Greenland (aka Greenlandair - country's flag carrier airline) with scheduled flights from Upernavik Airport to Ilulissat, Qaanaaq and Qaarsut. Most settlements in Upernavik archipelago are served during weekdays with Bell 212 (twin-engine) helicopter flights. During summer, a Royal Arctic Line passenger ferry also links these villages.
Upernavik Greenland was included as port of call in the Northwest Passage cruises of the following passenger ships:
- Seven Seas Navigator - 63-days itinerary from Miami Florida to Montreal Quebec (2017 - June 17 to August 18)
- Note: All Northwest Passage ship transits are assisted by a Canadian icebreaker or other vessel with an ice-strengthened hull.
