Zaandam is a Zaan River cruise port and city in the Netherlands's North Holland province, with population around 80,000. The town is located north of Amsterdam (the country's capital) and received city rights in 1811. Initially named Saenredam, during Gouden Eeuw (Dutch Golden Age / 17th century) Zaandam developed a large wind-milling industry with thousands of wind-powered mills processing imported from Scandinavia wood for Holland's shipbuilding. The town is still an important lumber-import port.

In 1697, the Russian Czar Peter the Great (1672-1725) lived here to study the Dutch shipbuilding. His house was preserved and currently serves as a museum (Czar Peter House). The city is also famous for housing McDonald's first European fast-food restaurant (opened in 1971).

After this Dutch city is named the cruise liner MS Zaandam (2000-built). The vessel is owned by Carnival Corporation and operated by its subsidiary company Holland America Line (HAL).
