Bremerhaven is the cruise port to Bremen, Germany. The port is located on the east side of Weser estuary on Germany's North Sea coast.
Bremerhaven was established in 1827 as a shipping port for Bremen - approx 40 ml (65 km) downstream Weser River to the south with medieval flavour, narrow streets and gabled houses. From Bremerhaven it's possible to visit Hamburg, founded by Charlemagne more than 1000 years ago.
The port of Bremerhaven is the 16th-largest container shipping port in the world and fourth-largest in Europe - with 5 million TEUs of cargo handled annually. In addition, over 1,35 million cars are imported or exported per year via Bremerhaven, which imports and exports more cars than any other European city (excepting Rotterdam in Holland). A new panamax-sized lock was opened in 2011, replacing the 1897 Kaiserschleuse, back then the world's biggest lock.
