Bremerhaven is situated on the east side of Weser estuary on Germany's North Sea coast. It was established in 1827 as a port for Bremen 40 miles down Weser River to the south with medieval flavour, narrow streets and gabled houses. From Bremerhaven it's possible to visit Hamburg, founded by Charlemagne more than 1,000 years ago.
The port of Bremerhaven is the 16th-largest container port in the world and fourth-largest in Europe with 5 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) of cargo handled annually. In addition, over 1,350,000 cars are imported or exported per year via Bremerhaven, which imports and exports more cars than any other European city (except for Rotterdam), and this kind of traffic is also growing. A new panamax-sized lock was opened in 2011, replacing the 1897 Kaiserschleuse, then the biggest lock worldwide.
