Luxembourg (aka Luxembourg City) is the capital city of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg - a souvereign country located in western Europe. The country is bordered by Belgium (north and west), Germany (east) and France (south). The capital city Luxembourg (population around 108,000) together with Strasbourg (France) and Brussels (Belgium) is one of the European Union's 3 official capitals. Here is seated the EU's European Court of Justice. Its people, languages and culture are highly intertwined with its neighboring countries, which makes it essentially a mix of French and German cultures. The repeated invasions (especially during WWII) resulted in Luxembourg's strong will to mediate between Germany and France, leading to the foundation of the EU.
With an area of 2,586 km2 (998 ml2), Luxembourg is one of Europe's smallest states. Luxembourg's total population of around 525,000 ranks the country the 8th least-populous in Europe. As a democracy with a constitutional monarch, the country is ruled by the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. This makes it the world's only remaining grand duchy. Luxembourg has an advanced economy and the world's highest GDP per capita (around USD 101,000).
A fun fact is that according to the Visa Restrictions Index, the citizens of Luxembourg have visa-free access to 172 countries / territories in the world. This ranks the Luxembourgian passport as the world's 6th "best passport" (in one group with Canada, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, South Korea, Switzerland). Note: by that index, in group 1 is Germany, group 2 (Sweden), group 3 (Finland, France, Italy, Spain, UK), group 4 (Belgium, Denmark, The Netherlands, USA) and group 5 (Austria, Japan, Singapore).
