Port Vila is the capital and largest city of Vanuatu. It is located on the island of Efate and has a population of 44,040 (2009), an increase of 50% on previous census result (29,360 in 1999). In 2009, Port Vila's population formed 19% of country's population, and 67% of the population of Efate.
Located in Shefa Province, on the south coast of the island of Efate, Port Vila is the commercial and economic centre of Vanuatu. The current mayor is of the Union of Moderate Parties, Ulrich Sumptoh, elected in January 2014, and his deputy is Leimara Malachi, of Vanua'aku Pati.
On 13 March 2015, Port Vila bore extensive damage from Cyclone Pam.
Vanuatu is a tax haven, so offshore financing in Port Vila is a major part of the economy. The country is still dependent on foreign aid, and most of it comes from Australia and New Zealand, though in recent years aid has also come from People's Republic of China.
