Wrangel Island is an island located in the Arctic Ocean, between East Siberian Sea and the Chukchi Sea. The isle lies astride 180° meridian. At this latitude the International Date Line is displaced eastwards to avoid the island and the Chukchi Peninsula on Russian mainland. Closest to Wrangel Island lies is small and rocky Herald Island situated 60 km (37 miles) to the east. Wrangel Island may have been the world's last place where mammoths survived.
Wrangel Island has a land area of 544 km2 (210.05 ml2), making it the United States' 29th largest island. Wrangell is separated from mainland by the close Blake Channel. The island contains Wrangell city, Alaska. The island of Wrangell is heavily forested and features an abundance of wildlife. Thoms Place is the only other community. It is located on the southwest side, across Zimovia Strait from Etolin Island. In 2000 the total population of Wrangell Island was 2,400.
Almost all of Wrangell Island is a federally protected nature sanctuary. It is administered by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Russia. In 1976 the island, together with its surrounding waters, was classified as a "strict nature reserve" ("Zapovednik") and received the highest level of protection. It excludes practically all human activity different from that for scientific purposes.
