Hapag-Lloyd Cruises expands focus on Japan across expedition and luxury programmes

Japan continues to hold a central position within the deployment strategy of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, with the company reaffirming the destination’s importance through an expanded series of expedition and luxury voyages aboard its expedition and premium fleets.

The current Japan season aboard the HANSEATIC inspiration has commenced with itineraries designed to present a broad perspective of the country’s geography, culture and coastal regions. The programme combines voyages linking Japan’s four principal islands with longer expedition routes extending across the North Pacific toward Alaska.

Japan has remained one of the company’s most established destinations for several years, supported by sustained demand for itineraries that combine urban centres, regional ports and remote coastal landscapes. Additional sailings aboard the HANSEATIC spirit, EUROPA and EUROPA 2 have already been scheduled through 2027 and 2028.

The company’s expedition operations in Japan have increasingly focused on routes outside conventional cruise circuits. The small-scale design of the expedition fleet allows access to lesser-visited harbours and coastal regions, while Zodiac operations enable landings independent of port infrastructure. These itineraries are supported by onboard specialists and expedition teams offering insight into local history, geology, ecology and culture through guided excursions and shore landings.

Among the principal highlights of the current season is a voyage connecting Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku within a single itinerary. The route presents a broad cross-section of the country, ranging from major urban centres and historic temple districts to volcanic terrain and remote coastal communities.

The expedition programme also extends beyond Japan through a North Pacific itinerary linking Otaru with Seward in Alaska. The voyage follows sections of the Pacific Ring of Fire through Hokkaido, the Aleutian Islands and Alaska, combining wildlife observation with cultural encounters in remote coastal settlements. The route includes new excursion elements such as traditional Alaskan trolling expeditions, allowing guests to fish in waters known for salmon populations while observing regional marine wildlife.

Japan is expected to remain a core component of the company’s programme over the coming years. In 2027 and 2028, the HANSEATIC spirit alone is scheduled to operate five voyages linking Japan, South Korea and Pacific island regions, while the luxury vessels EUROPA and EUROPA 2 will continue operating itineraries focused on the contrast between modern metropolitan centres, historic traditions and natural landscapes.

Aboard the EUROPA 2, selected voyages will also incorporate the company’s art2sea cultural programme. A Tokyo-to-Hong Kong itinerary is planned to include curated art and cultural experiences developed in cooperation with collectors, artists and cultural specialists, with visits to museums, galleries and private collections in Japan and China alongside onboard discussions and presentations.

The company indicated that the continued expansion of its Japan deployment reflects enduring interest in voyages combining expedition access, cultural immersion and extended regional exploration across East Asia and the North Pacific.
