Port Bartin (locode TRBTN) is on the Black Sea while the city is located inland (on Bartın River/navigable waterway) which allows access to the city directly from the Black Sea (approx 14 km / 9 mi sailing upstream) via smaller-sized ships, superyachts and boats. The settlement (as Parthenios/Parthenia) was established as an Ancient Greek colony, and later became part of the Imperium Romanum/Roman Empire, the Byzantium/Eastern Roman Empire and in the late-14th-century (1392) part of the Ottoman Empire (1299-1923).
Amasra (port locode TRAMA) was also founded by the Greeks under the name Amastris, and is mentioned in Homer's Iliad (aka Song of Ilion) together with three other Ionian colonies (Cromna, Sesamus, Cytorus). Amasra is popular for its Archaeological Museum (located on the waterfront) which has ruins both on land and underwater. Other tourist attractions include Amasra Castle (built by the Romans, fortified by the Byzantines and the Genoese), Fatih Mosque (9th-century Byzantine church), the Kuskayası Monument (akak Bird's Rock Road Monument/built by the Roman Governor Gaius Julius Aquila during the reign of Emperor Tiberius Claudius)
