Independent sightseeing: Easy. River cruise ships normally dock along Rijnkade, directly beside central Arnhem. The historic center, Eusebius Church, John Frost Bridge and the principal Battle of Arnhem sites can all be reached on foot. Public transport or a taxi is needed for the Netherlands Open Air Museum, Burgers’ Zoo and Airborne Museum Hartenstein.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Passengers normally walk directly ashore at Rijnkade rather than passing through a cruise terminal. Exact mooring positions vary along the quay, so walking distances depend on where the ship is assigned.

• Eusebius Church and the old center: approximately 0.5–1 km (0.3–0.6 mi), or 7–15 minutes on foot.
• John Frost Bridge: generally 5–15 minutes on foot along the river.
• Arnhem Central Station: approximately 1–1.5 km (0.6–0.9 mi), or 15–20 minutes on foot.

The route from the quay into the center is mostly level, although stairs or sloping access may be encountered at some sections of the riverfront. Arnhem Central is the main interchange for local buses and regional trains.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Historic Center and Eusebius Church

Allow 1.5–2.5 hours for the compact center. Walk from Rijnkade to Eusebius Church, then explore the surrounding pedestrian streets, Market Square, Jansplein and the shopping lanes around Bakkerstraat. The church interior explains Arnhem’s medieval and wartime history, while its elevated viewing areas offer broad city and river views when open.

This is the easiest independent option and leaves considerable flexibility for a short call.

John Frost Bridge and Battle of Arnhem Sites

Allow 1.5–2.5 hours. Follow Rijnkade toward John Frost Bridge and visit Airborne at the Bridge, a small exhibition overlooking the crossing that became central to the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944. Continue to the memorial area near the northern approach before returning through the city center.

The route is practical independently and mostly level. Crossing the entire bridge is optional; it adds distance without being necessary to obtain good views or reach the principal interpretation sites.

Netherlands Open Air Museum

Allow at least 3.5–5 hours including transport. The large outdoor museum contains historic houses, farms, workshops and other buildings representing everyday life across the Netherlands. Consider it a half-day destination rather than a quick museum visit.

Walk or take a taxi to Arnhem Central, then use city bus 3 toward Burgers’ Zoo/Openluchtmuseum and leave at the Openluchtmuseum stop. Check the current return schedule before entering. A taxi is simpler when the port call is short or several passengers are travelling together.

Burgers’ Zoo

Allow approximately 4–5 hours including transport. The zoo is known for large themed environments and requires substantial walking. Bus 3 runs from Arnhem Central to a stop directly outside the entrance.

This option suits families and passengers who want to devote most of the call to one attraction. Trying to combine it with the Open Air Museum usually results in a rushed visit, even though the two attractions are close to one another.

Airborne Museum Hartenstein in Oosterbeek

Allow 3–4 hours including travel. This larger museum occupies the former British headquarters used during the Battle of Arnhem and provides much more detail than the compact exhibition beside John Frost Bridge.

Oosterbeek lies outside central Arnhem, so use a direct taxi, a cruise excursion or carefully planned public transport. A battlefield tour is preferable for visitors who want to understand the dispersed landing grounds, memorials and fighting locations rather than see only the city bridge.

Self-Guided Walking Tour

Riverfront, Bridge and City Center Route

Distance: approximately 4 km (2.5 mi). Pure walking time: about 55–70 minutes. Recommended total time: 2.5–3.5 hours. Difficulty: Easy to moderate, predominantly level with occasional uneven paving and possible quay access steps.

1. Rijnkade: Start at the ship and follow the riverfront toward John Frost Bridge.
2. Airborne at the Bridge: Visit the compact exhibition overlooking the battlefield and bridge.
3. John Frost Bridge memorial area: View the bridge and nearby commemorative features from its northern approach.
4. Eusebius Church: Walk back toward the center and visit Arnhem’s principal landmark.
5. Duivelshuis and Markt: See the historic building beside the church and continue across the central square.
6. Pedestrian center: Explore Bakkerstraat, Jansplein and the surrounding shopping streets.
7. Rijnkade: Return downhill through the center to the ship.

The route can be shortened by returning directly from Eusebius Church to the quay. Allow additional time if entering the church or Airborne at the Bridge, and confirm their opening hours before setting out.

Excursions Beyond Arnhem

Arnhem is a gateway to the wooded Veluwe region and several important Second World War sites. Organized excursions are particularly useful for visiting multiple battlefield locations, the airborne landing areas or the Airborne Cemetery, as these are spread across Arnhem, Oosterbeek and the surrounding countryside.

De Hoge Veluwe National Park and the Kröller-Müller Museum are also possible during a long call, but reaching them independently requires bus connections and consumes a significant part of the day. A ship excursion, prearranged transfer or taxi provides better control over the return time.

Practical Tips

• Confirm the ship’s exact Rijnkade mooring point before calculating walking distances.
• Use Arnhem Central for buses to the Open Air Museum and Burgers’ Zoo, and check live journey information before departure.
• Card payment is widely used, including on Dutch public transport; verify the current payment method before boarding.
• Weather beside the river can change quickly, so carry a light waterproof layer.
• For an attraction outside the center, plan the return journey before entering and keep a generous margin for delays.
• Return to the quay at least 30–45 minutes before the ship’s required all-aboard time, or earlier after a regional excursion.
