Bad Essen has regional bus services but no central passenger railway station. For a brief port call, walking is generally more useful than local public transport. A taxi should be booked in advance for Schloss Ippenburg, Schloss Hünnefeld or the dinosaur tracks at Barkhausen.

Solepark and SoleArena

Allow about 45–60 minutes for the landscaped spa park. Its principal feature is the SoleArena, where mineral-rich brine passes over blackthorn walls and creates salty, aerosol-filled air. The structure is freely accessible, although scheduled therapy sessions and other facilities may follow separate timetables. The park also contains sensory installations and paths suitable for a relaxed stroll.

Old Watermill

The Alte Wassermühle is a worthwhile exterior stop close to the historic center. Demonstrations and interior access are limited to selected dates and may be affected by restoration work, so treat entry as a bonus rather than the basis of an independent itinerary.

Canal Waterfront

If time is short, remain near the marina for a level walk along the Mittelland Canal. Seating, waterside views and nearby refreshments make this the easiest option for passengers who prefer minimal walking. Boat rental may operate seasonally, but it is unsuitable for a tightly timed call unless reserved and sufficient return time is available.

The municipality also has a marked digital circuit of approximately 1.5 km (0.9 mi) beginning at the SoleArena. It can be added if the call allows another 30–45 minutes.

Options Requiring Transport

Schloss Ippenburg Gardens

The private estate is known for extensive ornamental, rose and kitchen gardens. It is a good 2–3-hour option when the gardens are open, but access is seasonal and generally limited to specified Sundays, holidays or events. Arrange a taxi in both directions and confirm current admission before leaving the ship.

Schloss Hünnefeld

Located in the countryside outside the center, this privately owned manor is best visited by taxi or as part of a pre-arranged outing. Exterior viewing is more consistently available than access to the park or museum, which can be restricted to particular days or guided groups.

Dinosaur Tracks at Barkhausen

The protected quarry displays fossilized dinosaur tracks, life-size models and information panels. It is too far from the cruise landing for a sensible short walk. A taxi, private vehicle or organized excursion is preferable; the surrounding long hiking circuit is appropriate only during an unusually long call.

• Wear comfortable shoes; central routes are straightforward, but paths become hillier south of the spa park.
• Do not rely on taxis waiting beside a small canal landing. Reserve outbound and return journeys for rural attractions.
