Bar is an Adriatic port town located in Montenegro's southern part, with urban population around 15,000 (municipality population over 40,000). Regularly scheduled ferries link Bar with Italy - Bari (1x daily crossing, by Jadrolinija) and Ancona (1x weekly crossing, by Montenegro Lines, during summer season only).

Port Bar (locode MEBAR) is the city's most recognizable feature, with seacoast line length 3,1 km (10170 ft), land area ~800 hectares/1980 acres, water area ~200 hectares/500 acres. Bar Port has annual cargo capacity ~5 million tons. The 1976-opened Belgrade-Bar railway made the Adriatic Sea's Dalmatian Coast accessible to tourists and also linked directly the Port of Bar with the Balcans' railroad network.

The Bar-based food company Primorka produces pomegranate juice and olive oil. The municipality has ~95,000 olive trees and ~80,000 citrus trees (orange, lemon, grapefruit, tangerine). Traditionally, the local economy is heavily dependent on the tourism industry.

Despite Bar's beautiful pebbled beaches, domestic tourists usually prefer smaller towns along the municipality's coast (like Sutomore), with long and sandy beaches. The municipality encompasses the region Skadarska Krajina (stretching from Lake Skadar's southern coast to the Rumija mountain) popular for hiking and leisure activities.

 

The town's name (Bar) is the shortened form of "Antivari", which is derived from the town's location - across the Adriatic Sea from Bari Italy. The settlement (as Antipargal) was founded in the early-6th-century.

Bar is a straightforward port to explore independently once you are outside the secure harbour. Cruise ships normally dock at North Pier 2 rather than tender. The berth is inside a large working cargo port, so passengers are normally transferred by shuttle bus through the restricted area to the waterfront in central Bar. From there the promenade and modern town are easy to explore on foot, while Stari Bar and the main countryside sights require transport.

Getting from the Cruise Port

The cruise berth is within the secure Port of Adria complex. Port shuttle buses carry passengers from Pier 2 to the main waterfront promenade, often described locally as the “Zero Point.” Taxis and tourist information are available around the city-side drop-off.

Do not plan on walking independently through the commercial port. Once at the shuttle drop-off, central Bar is flat and very walkable.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Stari Bar and the Old Olive Tree

Best choice for most first-time visitors. Stari Bar is a ruined fortified town set against the mountains, with stone lanes, gates, churches, a clock tower and the remains of its aqueduct. Allow around 1.5–2 hours to explore the site.

From central Bar, a taxi is the simplest option and the drive is roughly 10 minutes. The nearby Old Olive Tree at Mirovica makes an easy additional stop. Allow about 3–4 hours for the complete outing including transport and a relaxed walk through the old bazaar.

Independent with some planning. Arrange the return taxi or agree a pickup time. Inside Stari Bar expect slopes, cobbles, steps and rough surfaces.

Bar Waterfront and King Nikola's Palace

This is the easiest option for a short call. From the shuttle drop-off, explore the seafront, King Nikola's Palace and gardens, Bar Marina and the modern town. The large Cathedral of Saint John Vladimir can also be included.

Allow around 2–3 hours at an easy pace. The central area is mostly flat and requires no additional transport.

Lake Skadar and Virpazar

Virpazar, one of the main starting points for boat trips on Lake Skadar, is roughly 30 minutes from Bar by road. A typical visit combines a lake cruise with time in the small village and, if desired, nearby viewpoints or wine country.

Allow approximately 4–5 hours. A pre-arranged driver or organized excursion is more practical than relying on public transport when working to a ship's departure time.

Budva, Sveti Stefan or Ulcinj

Bar can also be used as a base for exploring farther along Montenegro's coast. Ulcinj is approximately half an hour away by road, while Budva normally takes around 45–60 minutes. Coastal traffic can increase journey times considerably in summer.

These destinations are better treated as the main excursion of the day rather than combined with extensive sightseeing in Bar. Kotor is considerably farther and the journey can become slow in heavy coastal traffic, so it is best reserved for a long port call with organized or carefully pre-arranged transport.

Organized excursion recommended for longer-distance sightseeing.

Self-Guided Walk: Central Bar

Difficulty: Easy. Approximately 3–4 km, around 45–60 minutes of pure walking or 2–3 hours with sightseeing stops. The route is predominantly flat.

  1. Shuttle drop-off / waterfront: Start where the port shuttle leaves passengers in central Bar.
  2. King Nikola's Palace: Visit the former royal seaside residence and its garden.
  3. Bar Marina: Continue along the waterfront past the marina and small boats.
  4. Seafront promenade: Follow the pedestrian-friendly coast, with cafés and views back toward the harbour and mountains.
  5. Cathedral of Saint John Vladimir: Turn inland to see one of modern Bar's most prominent landmarks.
  6. Central Bar: Walk back through the town's broad streets and pedestrian areas toward the waterfront.

Finish near the shuttle drop-off rather than at the cruise berth itself, and allow time for the transfer back through the secure port.

Beaches

The coast north of central Bar has pebble beaches, including the long Žukotrlica beach toward Šušanj. They are practical for passengers who want a simple swim-and-walk day, although water shoes are useful on the stony shore. For a beach-focused call farther from town, use a taxi and arrange the return in advance.

Practical Tips

  • Confirm the day's shuttle arrangements after leaving the ship, as access within the working port is controlled.
  • For Stari Bar, taxis are more convenient than trying to walk the several kilometres inland.
  • Wear sturdy footwear at Stari Bar; the archaeological site has uneven stones, slopes and steps.
  • Allow extra road time for Budva, Kotor and other coastal destinations during the summer season.
  • For Lake Skadar or longer coastal trips, build in a substantial return margin rather than planning around the fastest possible driving time.
