Bonifacio is a port town located on Corsica Island's southern coast, across the Mediterranean Sea to Sardinia Island (Italy). The ancient stone houses of the once much-besieged community cleave to one of the most striking sites of the island - a towering promontory of limestone rock jutting out into the sea 200 ft below. Established around AD 828 as a defense against pirates, the city of Bonifacio was taken from Pisa at the end of the 12th century by the Genoese and until modern times it remained under the influence of Genoa.

Corsica Island has total area 8680 km2 (3351 mi2), a mountainous interior, with highest  elevation point (Mount Cinto) 2710 m (8892 ft). The coast is mostly indented and rocky in the west; in the east Aleria's coastal plain is dotted with swamps and lagoons. From the mountains descend numerous torrential streams. The largest rivers are Golo and Tavignano. In 1768 the Genoese ceded the isle to France and a significant result of the cession was that Napoleon Bonaparte, who was born at Ajaccio the following year, was a citizen of France. During the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, the isle was twice held by the British.

After departing Bonifacio, cruise ships often offer scenic cruising of the Santa-Manza Gulf (Sant'Amanza) surrounded by limestone cliffs. Being quite windy, the waterway is perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Bonifacio’s main sights are concentrated around its sheltered harbor and the fortified upper town, perched above white limestone cliffs. For a short cruise call, the most practical combination is an old-town walk followed by a short coastal boat trip.

Independent with some planning or transport: the waterfront is easy to explore on foot, but reaching the upper town involves a steep climb. A tourist road train provides an alternative when operating.

Getting Ashore and Around

Bonifacio accommodates small cruise ships; depending on the vessel and arrangements for your call, passengers may disembark at a harbor berth or arrive by tender. Confirm your actual landing point and return instructions aboard, rather than treating the port-map marker as the passenger exit.

Once on the harbor waterfront, cafés, shops and sightseeing-boat departures are accessible on foot. Allow roughly 15–25 minutes to reach the upper town from the marina area, depending on your landing point and pace. The approach includes steep slopes and steps.

The paid Petit Train departs from the marina near the sightseeing boats and climbs to the Haute-Ville. Check its operating times, queues and return boarding point before relying on it. It avoids the initial climb, although the old town still has uneven paving and changes of level. Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Explore the Citadel and Old Town

Allow 2–3 hours for the ascent, narrow streets, Sainte-Marie-Majeure church and sea-facing viewpoints. Around Porte de Gênes and the Bastion de l’Etendard, you can appreciate the fortifications and views over the harbor. Continuing west toward the marine cemetery adds a quieter walk beyond the busiest lanes.

This is practical independently for passengers comfortable with hills. Use the road train to reduce the climbing, or stay around the marina for a gentler visit with harbor views and a café stop.

See the Cliffs and Caves by Boat

Short sightseeing trips leave from the marina and show the cliff-top town from below. Choose a circuit of approximately one hour rather than an island outing if time ashore is limited. Allow 1.5–2 hours overall for tickets, boarding and the trip.

Confirm the actual duration and return time before purchasing. Wind and sea conditions can change the route or prevent cave access. A short trip combines well with independent old-town sightseeing. [Local boat operator](https://www.spmbonifacio.com/circuits)

Descend the King of Aragon’s Staircase

The Escalier du Roy d’Aragon descends through the cliff to a narrow path above the sea. Allow approximately 30–60 minutes, plus any admission queue. You must climb back up the same steep, irregular staircase, so this is a demanding addition rather than a shortcut to the waterfront.

Closed shoes with flat soles are required. Skip it if you have difficulty with stairs or exposed heights, and check access conditions before joining the queue. [Official visitor guidance](https://bonifacio.fr/decouvrir/bonifacio-ville-dart-et-dhistoire/lescalier-du-roy-daragon/)

Walk a Short Section of Campu Rumanilu

From the Saint-Roch chapel area, follow the signed coastal trail eastward for views back toward the old town and limestone cliffs. An out-and-back walk of 30–60 minutes makes a useful extension to a town visit; turn around before committing to the longer continuation toward Pertusato.

The path has uneven limestone, exposed sections and little shade. Wear shoes with grip, carry water and stay on the marked trail away from cliff edges. [Bonifacio Tourist Office](https://bonifacio.co.uk/)

Choose a Beach Transfer or Longer Island Outing

Maora Beach is a practical mainland option with a prearranged taxi or transfer. The drive from the marina is approximately 15 minutes in light traffic; allow 2–3 hours overall for a swim and the return journey. Arrange collection before leaving town, particularly during busy summer periods. [Official beach information](https://www.visit-corsica.com/)

Lavezzi island trips require substantially more time than the short cliff cruises. Check whether the excursion includes landing, swimming or sightseeing only, and confirm its complete return schedule. For a limited call, a ship-arranged excursion is preferable if available; otherwise, the short coastal boat trip is easier to fit around your return deadline.

Self-Guided Walking Route

Marina, Upper Town and Sea Views — Moderate

Start and finish: your harbor landing point. Approximate distance: 2.5–3 km (1.6–1.9 mi), depending on the quay and streets used. Walking time: 60–80 minutes. Recommended total: 2–3 hours, excluding the King of Aragon’s Staircase.

  1. Marina waterfront: follow the public quayside toward the old-town ascent, noting your return berth or tender landing.
  2. Montée Rastello: climb through the lanes toward the upper town.
  3. Saint-Roch chapel viewpoint: pause for views of the cliffs and sea.
  4. Porte de Gênes: enter the fortified town through its historic gateway.
  5. Bastion de l’Etendard: enjoy the surrounding viewpoints; add an interior visit if open and time permits.
  6. Sainte-Marie-Majeure: explore the nearby lanes and small squares.
  7. Place du Marché and sea-facing viewpoints: finish the upper-town circuit before returning through Porte de Gênes and descending to the marina.

The main difficulty is the ascent and descent, with steps, slopes and uneven paving. Taking the road train uphill shortens the walking route, but does not make the whole visit step-free. Leave the optional staircase or coastal trail until you know how much time remains.

Return-to-Ship Tips

  • Use the ship’s stated all-aboard or last-tender time as your deadline.
  • For local sightseeing, aim to reach your boarding point at least 45–60 minutes before that deadline; allow more after a beach transfer or separate boat excursion.
  • Summer congestion can delay taxis and the tourist train. Avoid depending on their final departure.
  • Bring water, sun protection and secure footwear. Exposed viewpoints and coastal paths can be hot or windy.
