Borkum Island is a municipality in Germany's Lower Saxony state (Leer District) with population around 5,000. The island is located west of Juist Island (Niedersachsen's/ Lower Saxony's Aurich District) and east of Rottumeroog Island (Holland-owned uninhabited isle part of West Frisian Islands, Wadden Sea). Juist Island is located between three German islands - Borkum (west), Norderney (east) and Memmert (southwest).
Borkum Island has highest elevation point 6 m (20 ft), length 10 km (6 mi), max-width 7 km (4 mi) and total area approx 31 km 2 (12 mi2), making it the largest of Ostfriesische Inseln (East Frisian Islands). The island is bordered by Westerems Strait (west, forms the Germany-Netherlands border), Osterems Strait (east), North Sea (north) and Wadden Sea (south). Borkum was formed in 1863 by merging two isles previously separated by shallow water. The island's shape and position change due to the strong sea currents. Since the early-20th-century, people try to limit the sea impact (especially storm surges) through structural measures, particularly extensive bank reinforcements on the western coast - including 35 stone walls (groynes) and a beach wall (at Sudbad Beach).
As cruise port, Borkum was included in the 2021 schedule of the TUI-owned German brand Hapag-Lloyd Cruises with the ships Hanseatic Inspiration (May 2021) and Hanseatic Nature (October 2021). Next tables show the ships' itineraries visiting Borkum.
