Eemshaven is a working industrial port rather than a walk-off sightseeing destination. Groningen is the strongest choice for a first visit, while the countryside around Uithuizen offers a quieter alternative. Independent sightseeing requires advance transport planning; an organized excursion is preferable if your ship cannot confirm straightforward passenger access and return arrangements.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Cruise ships berth alongside industrial quays. Eemshaven also handles newly built cruise ships preparing for delivery, so a cruise ship alongside does not necessarily indicate a conventional passenger call. Confirm your ship’s berth, permitted passenger exit and transport arrangements before planning a day ashore.

Do not assume that the AG Ems ferry terminal is your cruise terminal or that Eemshaven railway station is within an easy walk of your gangway. The port is extensive, and the practical route depends on the berth and terminal access rules.

• Groningen by road: Allow approximately 40–50 minutes each way, depending on the berth, traffic and city drop-off. Prebook a taxi or transfer, including the return journey. Confirm whether your cruise line provides any transport.
• Groningen by train: Arriva connects Eemshaven station, near the Borkum ferry terminal, with Groningen. The rail journey takes approximately 55 minutes, before adding the transfer from your ship and waiting time. Check the actual timetable and arrival station for your date.
• Exploring on foot from the ship: There is no compact sightseeing center immediately outside the industrial berths. Use the passenger route designated for your call rather than attempting a walk through cargo-handling areas.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Groningen: Squares, Canals and City Views

Independent with prearranged transport. Once in Groningen, the compact center is straightforward to explore on foot. Combine Grote Markt and the Martinitoren exterior with the Prinsentuin garden, Forum Groningen and the old warehouses along Hoge der A. Vismarkt and the surrounding streets provide convenient places for a meal.

Allow 3–4 hours in the city, plus transfers and your return margin. Choose one substantial indoor visit if time is limited: the Groninger Museum suits an art-focused visit, while Forum offers a shorter stop and rooftop views when accessible. A Martinitoren climb requires additional time and involves many stairs.

Menkemaborg and Uithuizen

Independent with a booked taxi or driver. Menkemaborg is a furnished historic manor with gardens in Uithuizen. It offers a manageable alternative to a full city visit, with time afterward for a short village stroll or refreshments.

Allow approximately 20–30 minutes each way by road from Eemshaven, depending on the berth, and 1.5–2 hours for the house and gardens. Check seasonal opening arrangements before booking transport. Arrange pickup in advance rather than relying on finding a taxi outside the museum.

Wadden Coast and Guided Nature Activities

Organized excursion or prearranged driver recommended. The surrounding coast is better suited to sea-dyke views, birdwatching and open landscapes than a conventional beach day. A coastal outing can be combined with nearby villages, provided the route and return transfer are agreed in advance.

Mudflat walking is a separate guided activity governed by tides and weather. Choose a short mainland-based outing only if its meeting time, duration and transport fit your call. Soft mud and channels can make these walks demanding; do not venture onto the tidal flats independently.

Borkum Island: Only for a Long Call with Suitable Ferries

Independent with substantial planning. Ferries connect Eemshaven with the German island of Borkum, with a conventional crossing of approximately 50 minutes. Reaching the town and beach also involves onward island transport, so the crossing time alone understates the journey.

This is a conditional option rather than a default shore plan. Confirm both ferry sailings, check-in requirements, island connections and transfers between the ferry terminal and your cruise berth. Allow most of the day and retain a generous return margin. Skip Borkum if the timetable leaves only one tight connection back to the ship.

Self-Guided Walk in Groningen

City Center and Canal Loop — Easy

Start and finish: Grote Markt, after your transfer into the city. This is a sightseeing meeting point, not a confirmed cruise shuttle stop. The approximate route is 3 km (1.9 mi), with 45–60 minutes of pure walking. Allow 2–3 hours for sightseeing and refreshments, excluding museum visits or a tower climb.

1. Grote Markt: Begin with the main square and town hall.
2. Martinitoren and Martinikerkhof: View the tower and walk around the quieter church surroundings.
3. Prinsentuin: Make a short garden detour if open.
4. Hoge der A: Continue west to the canal and historic warehouse frontages.
5. Akerk and Vismarkt: Return through the western center for the church exterior and market square.
6. Forum Groningen: Finish with the modern cultural building and, if accessible, its rooftop before returning to Grote Markt.

The route is mostly flat, with paving, occasional cobbled surfaces and busy cycle crossings. Garden paths may be less convenient for some mobility aids. If arriving by train at Groningen’s main station, allow roughly another 15–20 minutes on foot each way between the station area and Grote Markt. Return to your agreed pickup point with enough time for the drive and port entry procedures.

Planning Your Return

• Obtain the exact berth, passenger gate and driver meeting point before leaving; “Eemshaven port” is too vague for a reliable pickup.
• For a Groningen road trip, plan to leave the city at least 90 minutes before all-aboard, allowing more if your ship advises it.
• If using trains, choose a return service that leaves room for disruption and the final transfer to your berth. Avoid relying on the last feasible connection.
• Carry a windproof, waterproof layer for coastal outings. Exposed dykes can feel considerably colder than the city.
