Bozcaada Island (port locode TRBZC), aka Tenedos, in ancient times is roughly 39 km2 (15ml2). It is located in the northeastern part of Aegean Sea near Istanbul. As Tenedos, the island is mentioned in both Iliad and Aeneid. Bozcaada Island is the site where the Greek fleet was hid near the end of Trojan War to trick the Trojans into believing that the war was over and into taking the Trojan Horse. Bozcaada Island was important throughout antiquity despite its small size, thanks to its strategic location at the entrance to the Dardanelles.
The sole town of Bozcaada Island has population around 2,000. The town is on the northeastern corner, facing Mainland Turkey. The cobbled streets in its central part boast their traditional architecture. The rest of Bozcaada Island is covered by scattered pine woods, vineyards, and Mediterranean shrubland, dotted by occasional vineyard manors and, near the coastline, housing estates used as vacation homes by mainland Turks.
The main attraction on Bozcaada Island is the castle (occupied by Genoans, Byzantines and Venetians), last rebuilt in 1815. The castle is illuminated at night, with a view out to the open sea. The past of the island is exhibited in a small museum.
The Bozcaada district covers the entire island plus 17 surrounding islets. The highest point is Göztepe (192 m /630 ft). The district center is located on the east side of the island, 22 km (12 mi) south of the Dardanelles Strait.
Up until recently, the Bozcaada district was 'sui generis' in Turkey as having no rural population. Due to metropolitan municipalities established after the 1980s, there are already some other districts that have no rural population.
Bozcaada Island cruise terminal
Cruise ships to Bozcaada Island dock (anchor) at Bozcaada - port town on the north-eastern coast.
Bozcaada is a compact Aegean island where the harbor, castle and old town can be explored easily on foot. Cruise ships generally anchor offshore and tender passengers into Bozcaada’s main harbor, although arrangements depend on the vessel. Beaches, vineyards and the island’s western landscapes require local transport.
At a Glance
- Independent sightseeing: Easy within Bozcaada Town; some planning or transport is needed for the rest of the island.
- Best short visit: Castle, waterfront and the adjoining Greek and Turkish quarters.
- For a longer call: Add a beach, winery visit or island drive.
- Terrain: The harbor area is straightforward, but old-town lanes can be uneven and the walk toward the hilltop windmills is uphill.
Getting from the Cruise Port
Tenders normally arrive at the harbor in the center of Bozcaada Town. Bozcaada Castle stands immediately beside the waterfront, while shops, cafes, restaurants and both historic quarters begin within a few minutes’ walk. No shuttle is normally necessary for exploring the town.
Seasonal minibuses serve popular beaches, including Ayazma, during the main visitor season. Services may be less frequent outside summer, so check the day’s timetable near the harbor before leaving town. Taxis can be useful for wineries, remote bays and the western side of the island.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Bozcaada Castle and Harbor
Allow about 60–90 minutes for the castle and surrounding waterfront. The large fortress dominates the harbor and offers elevated views over the town and sea. The interior includes uneven surfaces and steps, so suitable footwear is helpful. Confirm admission and opening arrangements locally before entering.
Explore the Greek and Turkish Quarters
Allow 1.5–2.5 hours for an unhurried walk through the neighboring districts. The Greek quarter has narrow lanes, colorful houses and the Church of the Virgin Mary, while the Turkish quarter contains traditional homes, small mosques, shops and shaded streets. The church may not be open for casual visits, but its bell tower and surrounding neighborhood remain worth seeing.
Ayazma Beach
Ayazma is one of the island’s best-known sandy beaches and is roughly a 15–20-minute drive from town. Seasonal minibuses commonly operate from the harbor area, but passengers should verify departure and return times before setting out. Allow at least three hours for transport and beach time. The Aegean water can feel cool, even in summer, and the beach may be busy during peak season.
Vineyards and Island Scenery
Bozcaada has a long winemaking tradition, with vineyards and wineries outside the town center. A taxi, prearranged driver or organized excursion is the practical choice for combining a winery with coastal viewpoints or several beaches. Confirm that tastings are available before traveling, as visitor access and schedules vary.
Western Coast and Sunset Area
The wind turbines, coastal viewpoints and Polente lighthouse area lie well beyond comfortable walking distance from the harbor. They are best reached by taxi, private vehicle or an island tour. This outing is more suitable for a longer call because transport must be coordinated carefully.
Self-Guided Old Town Walk
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Distance: Approximately 2 km (1.2 mi)
Walking time: About 30–40 minutes without stops
Recommended time: 2–3 hours including the castle and refreshments
- Tender landing and harbor: Begin beside the fishing boats and waterfront cafes.
- Bozcaada Castle: Cross toward the fortress for exterior views or visit the interior if it is open.
- Turkish quarter: Walk through the lanes south of the harbor, passing traditional houses and small mosques.
- Town center: Continue through the compact shopping and dining streets.
- Greek quarter: Explore the lanes north of the center and find the Church of the Virgin Mary.
- Harbor waterfront: Descend toward the sea and follow the waterfront back to the tender landing.
The central route is short, but cobbles, uneven paving and occasional slopes may be difficult for passengers with limited mobility. The harbor remains close throughout, making it easy to shorten the walk.
Practical Tips
- Allow extra time for the return tender, particularly if sea conditions cause slower operations or queues.
- Check the final tender time before leaving the landing area.
- Carry Turkish lira for small purchases and local transport, although many established businesses may accept cards.
- For beach trips, confirm the return minibus rather than relying on an assumed frequency.
- Leave a generous return margin after any winery tour, beach visit or west-coast drive.
- Bozcaada can be windy; bring sun protection and a light layer even on a warm day.
