Cesme is a port town in Turkey's westernmost end, with population around 22,000. The town is located on a promontory (raised land) on the tip of Cesme peninsula. The peninsula extends inland to form a whole with the Karaburun Peninsula.

The cruise port is popular as gateway to a premium (yet affordable) holiday resort coastal area, where 2/3 of the district's population is concentrated. Cesme is 85 km (53 ml) west of Ä°zmir - the biggest port city and metropolitan center in the Aegean Turkey. A 6-lane highway (Otoyol 32) connects both cities. Cesme's neighboring districts are named Urla (to the east) and Karaburun (to the north), both part of the Ä°zmir Province. The name "cesme" in Turkish means "fountain". It possibly draws reference from the numerous Ottoman fountains scattered across the town.

Cesme is best-known as Turkey's kite- and wind-surfing capital. It is also ranked among the world's top 5 surfing resorts. Especially Alacati provides the ideal location for surfing - this is where all surfing schools are located and Surf Festivals take place annually. Alacati is unique as the water depth is 1 m for over 700 m (2300 ft) off shore, and the location is well known for its strong winds.

On June 30, 2019, was officially inaugurated the regularly-scheduled ferry service between Cesme and Lavrion Greece. For the first time ever, Greece's and Turkey's mainlands are now connected by ferries. The roundtrip crossings (on MF Kaunas ferryboat, IMO 8311924) take ~7 hours. The ship departs from Cesme on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and from Lavrion on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Fares for a one-way ticket started at EUR 55.

Cruise ships in Cesme port dock at the only one pier, located at close proximity to the tourist info office.

The town itself is easily walkable. The town's main square is lined up with shops, cafes and restaurants (all with Wi-Fi coverage). Over the square there is a small fortress (functioning as museum).

Chios Island (Greece) is located opposite of Cesme, at approx 60 min by ferry. Ferries to Chios are regularly scheduled, which makes the Greek island a tour destination.
