Como is a Lake Como (Adda River) cruise port and city in Italy's Lombardy region (northwestern Italy) with a population of around 85,000. The town is located on Lake Como (aka Lario) on the southwestern shore. Adda River (a Po River tributary) flows through the lake.

Town's proximity to Lake Lario and the Alps Mountain make it a very popular vacation travel destination for both domestic and international tourists. The city also attracts travelers with its numerous artworks, museums, medieval architecture (churches, palaces), and scenery (nature parks and gardens). The best-known landmarks include Duomo di Como (15th-century cathedral), Basilica di San Fedele (early-12th-century church), Chiesa di Sant'Agostino (early-14th-century church), Sant'Abbondio di Como (11th-century basilica), Basilica di San Carpoforo (11th-century, built over a former temple of the Roman god Mercury), Broletto (medieval town hall), Villa Olmo (late-18th-century, built by the Odescalchi family, now a museum), Tempio Voltiano (museum), Castello Baradello (12th-century castle overlooking the city), Museo Didattico Della Seta (silk museum), Museo Liceo (scientific), Pinacoteca Civica di Palazzo Volpi (17th-century palace, now an art gallery).

As a cruise port, Como was included in the 2019 schedule of the Scylla-owned ship Inspire, operated under charter by Tauck River Cruises.

The next table shows Tauck's 9-day itinerary (between homeports Amsterdam and Basel/Zurich) as ports sequence.

Como's nearest airports with regularly scheduled international flights are in Milano (Malpensa, Linate), Bergamo (Orio al Serio) and Lugano (Switzerland). Malpensa Airport (Milan) is approx 30-min drive by car (~2 hours by train). Linate Airport (Milan) is approx 1-hour by car or train). Orio al Serio Airport (Bergamo) is approx 90-min by car (2 hours by train). Lugano Agno Airport is approx 1-hour by car (1,5 hours by train) and offers only direct flights between Switzerland and Italy (often via private charter planes). Train travel between Como and Zurich is 3-5 hours.

Como is best treated as a compact lakeside city rather than a conventional cruise port. The CruiseMapper listing relates mainly to cruise-tour itineraries that reach Como overland; there is no regular schedule of seagoing or river cruise ships. Local sightseeing boats use the central lakefront piers, while cruise-tour passengers may arrive by coach, train or a transfer arranged by their operator.

Independent sightseeing: Easy in central Como. The old town, cathedral, lakefront and funicular are close together. Trips farther up Lake Como require careful timetable planning.

Getting into Como

  • From the lakefront piers: Piazza Cavour and the historic center are immediately accessible on foot.
  • From Como San Giovanni station: The cathedral and lakefront are roughly 1.5–2 km (0.9–1.2 mi) away, mostly downhill when entering town. Allow about 20–30 minutes on foot.
  • By organized cruise-tour transfer: Confirm the exact drop-off point and departure time with the tour operator; coaches may not stop beside the principal sights.
  • Local transport: City buses and taxis are useful for travelers with limited mobility, but most central attractions are easier to connect on foot.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Historic Center and Lakefront

Allow 2–3 hours for the cathedral, Piazza Duomo, the medieval Broletto, Piazza San Fedele and the pedestrian streets inside the former city walls. Continue to Piazza Cavour and the waterfront promenade. This is the simplest independent option and requires no advance transport planning.

Ride the Funicular to Brunate

The lower funicular station is on the eastern side of the waterfront, about 1 km (0.6 mi) from Piazza Cavour. The ride to Brunate takes approximately seven minutes and provides elevated views over the lake and surrounding mountains.

Allow 2–3 hours for the return journey, viewpoints and possible queues. Brunate has slopes, steps and uneven lanes. Walking farther to the Volta Lighthouse requires additional time and a sustained uphill section, so it is better suited to passengers with a longer call and good mobility.

Walk to Villa Olmo

Follow the western lakefront past the Tempio Voltiano, Monument to the Fallen and a sequence of historic villas. Villa Olmo is approximately 2 km (1.2 mi) from Piazza Cavour. The route is mainly level and scenic, although access to the villa’s interior may depend on exhibitions or events.

Allow 2–3 hours for the return walk and stops. Strong walkers can continue beyond Villa Olmo toward the landscaped grounds of Villa del Grumello, but should turn back well before their required departure time.

Take a Lake Boat

A short local sailing provides lake views without committing to a distant destination. Longer trips to Bellagio, Varenna or the central-lake villas can consume much of a port call, especially when using regular stopping services.

Check the official Navigazione Laghi timetable for the exact date and identify the return sailing before departure. Fast services may require separate planning or reservations. A distant lake trip is sensible only during a long stay with a generous return margin.

Self-Guided Como Walking Tour

Distance: Approximately 3 km (1.9 mi)
Pure walking time: About 45 minutes
Recommended time with stops: 2–3 hours
Difficulty: Easy; largely level, with cobbles in the old town.

  1. Piazza Cavour: Begin beside the central ferry piers and lakefront.
  2. Como Cathedral and Broletto: Walk inland to the city’s principal monumental group.
  3. Piazza San Fedele: Continue through pedestrian lanes to the Romanesque basilica and compact medieval square.
  4. Porta Torre: Cross the old town to the surviving fortified gateway.
  5. Teatro Sociale: Return through the historic center past the neoclassical theater.
  6. Lakeside promenade: Finish with a walk around the harbor toward the Tempio Voltiano before returning to Piazza Cavour.

The route can be shortened at any point. Passengers returning to Como San Giovanni station should allow extra time for the uphill walk from the lakefront.

When an Organized Excursion Is Preferable

Consider an organized excursion for Villa del Balbianello, Bellagio combined with other central-lake villages, or a panoramic drive along the narrow lakeshore roads. These outings involve longer transfers, seasonal schedules and possible congestion. A coordinated tour reduces the risk of losing time at ferry connections, although the stated meeting and return times must still be followed carefully.

Practical Tips

  • Verify whether the itinerary brings passengers to Como by lake boat, train or coach; the CruiseMapper map point should not be treated as a guaranteed passenger exit.
  • Check ferry and funicular operations on the day, as schedules and temporary interruptions can change.
  • Expect queues at the funicular and ferry ticket offices during summer weekends and holiday periods.
  • Wear suitable shoes for cobbled streets and for the steeper lanes in Brunate.
  • For independent lake trips, plan around a specific return service and keep a substantial buffer before the required meeting or departure time.
