Ad-Dammam is a Red Sea cruise port, a major cargo port and Saudi Arabia's 6th-largest city by population (over 1,25 million) - following Riyadh, Jeddah, Mecca, Medina, Khamis Mushayt, as well as the capital of al-Mintaqah ash-Sharqiyah (Emirate of the Eastern Province/Kingdom's Eastern Region). King Abdul Aziz Port (Dammam) serves as the cargo port/seaport for Riyadh (the Kingdom's capital city) located approx 390 km (245 mi) to the east.

Dammam City is best-known as a major center for Saudi Arabia's oil industry (natural gas and petroleum exports) as well as the Kingdom's fastest-growing city (~12% a year). Dammam Metro (aka Greater Dammam) comprises three cities - Dammam, Dhahran, Khobar. By Metro population (over 2,15 million) and area (1471 km2 / 568 mi2), Greater Dammam is the 4th largest in the Arabian Gulf Cooperation Council (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar).

The city's area was first settled in the early-20th-century (1923, as a small fishing village) and started to develop progressively after 1938 when large oil reserves were discovered in the region. Greater Dammam (and the entire Eastern Province) are served by King Fahd Airport (aka Dammam Airport). The 1999-opened airport is approx 20 km (32 mi) northwest of the city (31 km/19 mi from downtown) and by land area (776 km2 / 300 mi2) is currently ranked the world's largest.

In April 2021, MSC and Cruise Saudi (fully-owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund) announced a partnership for launching Red Sea cruises (2021-2022 winter season) with the homeporting in Jeddah of the ship MSC Magnifica.

  • Magnifica was scheduled to operate 7-day voyages (November 2021 through March 2022) visiting 3 Saudi ports - including weekly calls to Port Al-Wajh (gateway to the UNESCO site Hegra in Al-Ula).
  • In addition to Magnifica's itineraries, MSC Virtuosa had scheduled Arabian Gulf 2021 winter program (December 2021 through March 2022) with visits to Prot Dammam and the Al-Ahsa Oasis.
  • With the two MSC liners, Cruise Saudi expected ~170,000 tourists during season 2021-2022.
  • MSC's Saudi Arabia voyages were also offered as fly-cruise deals with fares inclusive of direct flights between Europe and Jeddah (King Abdulaziz Airport) provided by Saudia (fka Saudi Arabian Airlines). As part of the agreement, Saudia's flight schedules were modified to fit the two MSC cruise ships' homeport times (departure and arrival).

Port Dammam is also the gateway to the Al-Ahsa Oasis (aka Al-Hasa and Haija) which is approx 60 km / 37 mi inland from the Gulf's coast. By area (85,4 km2 / 33 mi2) Al-Hasa is currently ranked the world's largest oasis, and since 2018 is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It groups 4x large cities (including Al-Mubarraz and Al-Hofuf) and 22x villages. The Oasis has 2,5+ million palm trees and supports year-round agriculture via irrigation by 280+ freshwater artesian springs.

King Abdul Aziz Port (Dammam)

By annual cargo shipping traffic, Dammam Port (locode SADMM, officially named "King Abdul Aziz Sea Port") is currently the Persian Gulf's largest (followed by Jeddah Islamic Port) and the Middle East's 3rd-busiest.

The Port covers land area approx 190 km2 (73 mi2). King Abdul Aziz Port serves mainly Saudi Arabia's oil export, but also handles various cargoes for major inland cities, including Riyadh (interlinked with Dammam via a railway).

Dammam Port has a modern ship repair complex (with two drydocks), a training center, dedicated terminals for TEU-containers, bulk cargoes, cold and frozen cargoes (mainly foods). The Port was expanded in the late 1970s, and in 1975 its import volumes reached 2,486 million cargo tons (~40% of the Kingdom's total imports).

King Abdul Aziz Port has two container ship terminals.

  • The older IPS Terminal is a joint venture between MACNA (Maritime Company for Navigation, Saudi Arabia) and International Port Services Co Ltd (subsidiary of Hutchison Ports). IPS Terminal has 3x rail tracks. At a dedicated rail-stacking area, all TEUs for Riyadh's Dry Port are loaded on to freight trains.
  • The second container terminal's construction started in October 2012 and was completed/inaugurated in April 2015.

In 2008, at IPS Terminal were imported 19,36 million tons of cargo (a 15,72% increase over 2007's 16,73 million tons) and handled around 1,3 million TEUs (25% of Saudi Arabia's entire shipping trade/cargo imports and exports).

King Abdul Aziz Port and Riyadh Dry Port are the termini of the SRO (Saudi Railways Organization) - one of the Kingdom's two rail networks (together with Saudi Railway Company). The railroad has total length 556 km (346 mi) and also interlinks the cities Al-Ahsa, Abqaiq, Al-Kharj, Haradh and Al-Tawdhihiyah.

Dammam Port's berths 4 to 13 are also rail-connected and utilized mainly for general cargoes.

Exploring Dammam During a Cruise Call

Independent with some planning or transport. Dammam is a transfer-based port on Saudi Arabia’s Arabian Gulf coast. The simplest outing combines its waterfront with a cultural or shopping stop. Ithra in nearby Dhahran is a strong alternative, while Al-Ahsa Oasis requires a substantial inland journey and is best visited on an organized excursion.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Cruise ships dock at King Abdulaziz Port, a working commercial harbor with cruise passenger facilities. Plan to leave the port by authorized transport rather than walking through the cargo area. The berth and passenger processing arrangements can affect how long it takes to get ashore.

Cruise Saudi lists central Dammam approximately 18 km (11.2 mi), or around 30 minutes by road, from the cruise facilities. Individual waterfront destinations may differ. Shuttle services are listed, but confirm your ship’s actual drop-off point, charges and last return departure before making plans.

For independent sightseeing, arrange a taxi or private driver and confirm the permitted pickup and return location. Do not assume an app-booked vehicle can collect you beside the ship. A driver is particularly useful when combining Dammam, Dhahran and Al Khobar; these are separate sightseeing areas rather than one walkable center.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Dammam Corniche and Heritage Village

Allow 3–4 hours including transfers. Choose this for a relatively relaxed introduction to the city. Walk a short section of the Corniche, enjoy the Gulf views, then visit Heritage Village for displays of traditional Saudi life and an optional local meal.

Heritage Village is a purpose-built cultural venue, rather than an old town. Check museum and restaurant opening times before setting out, particularly for a morning call. Use a vehicle between stops if the heat makes walking uncomfortable.

Ithra in Dhahran

Allow 2–3 hours inside, plus road transfers. The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, known as Ithra, offers distinctive architecture, museum galleries, a library and an energy exhibition. It is a useful choice when you prefer an indoor cultural visit to extended outdoor walking.

Arrange return transport and select the galleries or exhibitions that interest you rather than trying to cover the entire complex. Check opening times and ticket requirements for individual attractions. Ithra currently lists Sunday closure and a late-afternoon opening on Fridays, which can rule it out for some cruise calls.

Al Khobar Waterfront

Allow 2–3 hours ashore there, plus transfers. Al Khobar offers a waterfront promenade, sea views and opportunities for a café or meal stop. It suits passengers who want an easy stroll rather than a packed sightseeing program.

Ask your driver to use a specific waterfront drop-off and pickup point. For a typical 7–8-hour call, Ithra and one short Al Khobar waterfront stop can be a practical combination if opening times and traffic permit. Avoid adding numerous stops across all three cities.

Al-Ahsa Oasis and Al-Qarah Caves

Organized excursion recommended. Al-Ahsa is a separate inland destination, not a neighborhood beside Dammam’s cruise terminal. Allow approximately two hours each way from the port area, depending on the first stop and traffic. Travel alone can consume around four hours of the call.

A focused excursion may combine Al-Qarah’s limestone passages with Al-Qaisariya Souq in Al-Hofuf and views of the oasis. Cave visits involve walking on uneven surfaces, with steps in places. Confirm the physical requirements and how much sightseeing time remains after transfers.

For a 7–8-hour call, choose an excursion explicitly timed for your ship. Do not attempt to combine Al-Ahsa with Ithra or an extensive Dammam city tour.

Self-Guided Waterfront Walk

Easy Corniche Out-and-Back

Start: a confirmed vehicle drop-off on Dammam Corniche near Heritage Village. This is a waterfront stroll after a transfer, rather than a walking route from the ship.

  1. Begin outside Heritage Village and identify your agreed return pickup point.
  2. Join the seafront promenade for views across the Gulf.
  3. Follow the waterfront through the landscaped seating areas.
  4. Pause at a convenient seafront viewpoint, then turn back after roughly 20–25 minutes.
  5. Return along the same promenade and visit Heritage Village if open, or meet your driver.

Distance: approximately 2–3 km (1.2–1.9 mi), depending on your turnaround point. Pure walking time: 30–50 minutes. Recommended time: 1–2 hours with pauses, longer if entering Heritage Village. The promenade is generally flat; heat, humidity and exposed sections are the main challenges. Shorten the route when conditions are uncomfortable.

Coastal and Beach Options

Marjan Island is an alternative scenic stop associated with Dammam’s Corniche. Treat it as a separate vehicle stop and confirm current access before setting out. It is better approached as a place for waterfront views and a short stroll than as a guaranteed swimming excursion.

For a dedicated beach day, Half Moon Bay lies beyond the immediate city waterfront. Arrange transport to a specific beach or resort and confirm visitor access, facilities and the return pickup beforehand. Resort day access should not be assumed. Dammam and Al Khobar’s urban promenades are primarily sightseeing areas, rather than substitutes for a planned beach visit.

Practical Tips and Returning to the Ship

  • For a typical 7–8-hour call, choose Dammam’s waterfront and one cultural stop, or Ithra with a short Al Khobar visit. Treat Al-Ahsa as a separate full-day choice.
  • Check your cruise line’s entry-document instructions before the call and carry the identification required for going ashore.
  • Wear modest clothing suitable for public places. Ask before photographing people and avoid photographing port security facilities.
  • Carry water and sun protection. Keep outdoor walks short during hot weather and use indoor stops for a break.
  • Confirm attraction hours, particularly on Fridays and during Ramadan, before committing to a transfer.
  • Agree the return fare, meeting point and pickup time before leaving your driver. Allow for traffic, port security and passenger processing.
  • For local independent outings, aim to reach the cruise facilities at least one hour before the ship’s stated all-aboard time, with additional allowance for longer journeys. Follow any earlier shuttle or port return deadline.
