Decatur AL (port locode USDED) is a Tennessee River/Ohio River cruise port and city in Alabama USA (Morgan County and Limestone County) with population around 55,000. Nicknamed "The River City", Decatur is located on Wheeler Lake (created by Wheeler Dam along the Tennessee River) and is the main city of Decatur Metro (population around 155,000).
American Cruise Lines/ACL's "Great Smoky Mountains Cruise" (between Knoxville TN and Huntsville AL) includes debarkation/embarkation in Decatur, which is followed/preceded by Huntsville (accessed via bus travel) where the cruisetour actually ends/starts.
Three lakes are estuaries of the Tennessee River in the region - Wheeler, Morgan, and Chula Vista. The city also extends to Flint Creek Island and the inlet Dry Branch.
At Decatur are linked (via the two Steamboat Bill Bridges) Morgan and Limestone counties. The original drawbridge (William Keller Bridge) was opened in 1928 and in 1963 was replaced with two bridges - one cantilever, and one reinforced concrete. The bridges carry three highways (US 31, US 72, SR 20).
As a cruise port, Decatur AL is included in the schedule of one of the USA's largest river cruise companies - AQSC-American Queen Voyages/Steamboat Company.
The next tables show American Duchess ship's 7-night/8-day itineraries that visit Decatur. Prices started from ~USD 2500 per person with double occupancy.

Like many river port cities in the USA, Decatur's economic growth in the 19th century was based on the railroad and shipping traffic. The city quickly developed into a major trade hub on the routes Nashville TN - Mobile AL (Caribbean seaport) and Chattanooga TN-New Orleans Louisiana (seaport).
Port Decatur Alabama
The 1971-founded Port Decatur is a transshipment river port directly connected to two major (Class I) freight railroads - Norfolk Southern Railway (total length 19420 mi / 31250 km, in 22x US states) and CSXT (total length 21000 mi / 34000 km, in Eastern USA and Canada's Ontario and Quebec provinces), as well as to Alabama state's highways.
Port Decatur's facilities include intermodal transfer points (dry ports for transhipments between river barges-trucks-trains), warehouses (for storing dry-bulk, liquid bulk, general cargo), open storage area (12 acres / 4,9 hectares) and quay length 2000 ft (610 m) with max draft 30 ft (9 m) year-round.
Port's traffic is mainly imports (industrial materials and agricultural products: sand, asphalt, fertilizers, coal, steel piping, grains, poultry feed products for Golden Kist) and transhipments.
By annual volumes, Decatur is currently ranked Tennessee River's busiest port, handling mainly cargo barge cargoes.
The city's current-day economy is based mainly on heavy industries like mining, manufacturing, chemicals, transportation. The city's largest employers are General Electric Company, 3M Company, Wayne Farms LLC (poultry producing and processing), ULA-United Launch Alliance (manufacturer of rocket vehicles and provider of spacecraft launch services), Nucor Corporation (steel production), Bunge Limited (agribusiness and food), Daikin Industries Ltd (Japanese air-conditioner manufacturer), Hyosung Corporation (South Korea, specializes in chemicals and industrial machinery, IT, trade, construction), Ascend Performance Materials LLC (high-performance materials), TVA-Tennessee Valley Authority (a federally-owned corporation specializing in river navigation, flood control, fertilizer manufacturing, electricity generation).
Decatur is a manageable river-cruise stop for historic streets, small museums and Tennessee River views. Easy independently if your ship docks at Rhodes Ferry Park: the northern end of downtown is nearby, and several sights can be combined on foot. Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge and Huntsville’s U.S. Space & Rocket Center require transport and more planning.
Getting from the Riverboat
American Cruise Lines calls have used the riverfront at Rhodes Ferry Park, close to Old Decatur. Confirm your vessel’s actual landing and passenger exit before setting out; the commercial Port Decatur location shown on a map should not be treated as the cruise landing.
From Rhodes Ferry Park, the Old State Bank and Bank Street are a short walk inland. Allow roughly 5–10 minutes to reach this sightseeing area, depending on the gangway location. Expect an uphill approach from the river, followed by generally gentle downtown terrain.
Cruise-operated sightseeing buses have served downtown attractions, but arrangements vary by call. Ask onboard about available transport, pickup points and the final return departure. For destinations outside downtown, arrange both outward and return transport in advance.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Old Decatur, Bank Street and the Riverfront
Allow 2–3 hours; practical independently from Rhodes Ferry Park. Combine the Old State Bank, Bank Street’s shops and the Historic Depot & Railroad Museum with a short walk through the historic neighborhood. The Carnegie Visual Arts Center is another nearby stop when an exhibition is open. Choose one or two interiors rather than trying to visit every museum.
Finish with river views at Rhodes Ferry Park. Museum opening days vary, so an outdoor architecture walk is the more flexible choice for an early, late or weekend call.
Cook Museum of Natural Science
Allow 1.5–2.5 hours inside, plus travel. This downtown museum offers interactive nature exhibits, live animals and displays covering habitats from caves to oceans. It suits families and passengers seeking an indoor activity during hot or wet weather.
It is farther inland than the Bank Street sights. Walk there if you are comfortable extending your downtown outing, or use cruise transport if offered. Check opening arrangements for your date, particularly Sundays, when access can depend on the season.
Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge
Independent with some planning or transport. Focus on the visitor center and nearby Wildlife Observation Building rather than attempting to explore the whole refuge. A short woodland trail links them, making this a useful nature outing without a long hike. Allow 1–2 hours on site, plus your confirmed road transfers.
Winter is the strongest season for crane and waterfowl viewing; other seasons offer different wildlife, with sightings never guaranteed. Check access before booking transport: visitor-center buildings and grounds have seasonal opening days and holiday closures. Arrange a return pickup rather than relying on finding a vehicle at the refuge.
U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Huntsville
Organized excursion recommended for a limited call. This attraction is outside Decatur and requires a road transfer. As a planning allowance, expect approximately 30–45 minutes each way in normal traffic, subject to your landing location and road conditions.
Allow at least 3–4 hours at the museum for the rocket displays and spaceflight exhibits. With transfers and a return buffer, this is a substantial half-day outing. Independent travel is practical only with dependable round-trip transport and enough time ashore; avoid adding a separate Huntsville city visit to a tight schedule.
Self-Guided Walking Tour
Rhodes Ferry Park and Old Decatur Loop
Approximate distance: 2 km (1.2 mi), depending on neighborhood detours. Pure walking time: 30–40 minutes. Recommended total: 2–3 hours with brief visits and a refreshment stop. Difficulty: easy to moderate, with an uphill section from the riverfront, street crossings and potentially uneven sidewalks.
- Rhodes Ferry Park: start at the public park exit after confirming the route from your gangway. Take a brief look along the Tennessee River.
- Old State Bank and Founders Park: walk inland to the bank’s columned frontage. Visit the interior if open and time permits.
- Bank Street: continue through the historic commercial area, stopping at shops or for a drink.
- Historic Depot & Railroad Museum: make a short visit if open, or view the depot exterior.
- Old Decatur residential streets: take a short detour to see historic houses from the public sidewalks. These are private homes.
- Carnegie Visual Arts Center: stop for the current exhibition if open, then return toward the Old State Bank and Rhodes Ferry Park.
Use a downtown map or the local historic-tour brochure to choose your residential detour. If your ship lands elsewhere, begin at the confirmed downtown drop-off and allow separately for the return transfer.
Practical Tips
- Check opening days: small museums, galleries and shops may have limited hours. Do not build the whole outing around an unconfirmed interior visit.
- Plan for heat: summer humidity can make even a short walk tiring. Carry water and use indoor stops for breaks.
- Keep the return simple: for a downtown walk, aim to be back at the landing at least 30 minutes before all-aboard, or earlier if instructed by the crew. Leave a larger margin for road trips.
- Confirm the correct pickup: note the ship landing or cruise-bus meeting point before leaving, especially if using private transport.
