Dorpen is a an Ems River cruise port and small town in Germany's Lower Saxony state (Emsland district) with population around 6,000. Dorpen is located approx 18 km (11 mi) south of Papenburg (or at ~20 min drive distance via road B70). Dorpen is connected via highways to Emden-Bottrop (A31), Meppen-Papenburg (B70) and Oldenburg (B401). Hourly scheduled trains link to Munster-Emden.
The settlement was founded in the early-9th-century. Current-day town's economy is heavily based on the paper producer UPM Nordland Papier GmbH (subsidiary of UPM-Kymmene Oyj - currently Europe's largest paper company) and shipping on Kustenkanal (Coastal Canal) as Dorpen Sluice is the canal's start/end point . Kustenkanal is an inland waterway with length 70 km (44 mi) that links Dortmund–Ems Canal (length 269 km / 167 mi, between Dortmund and Emden) with Hunte River (tributary of Weser River). Ems River has length around 371 km (230 mi), flows ~27 km (17 mi) northwest of Emden and empties into North Sea.
In Dorpen is GVZ Emsland - Lower Saxony's largest freight logistics (trimodal distribution center) serving ships, trains and vehicles. By handled annual traffic, GVZ Emsland is ranked Germany's 6th biggest (out of 36 total).
As cruise port, Dorpen is included in the regular schedule of one of Europe's largest river cruise companies - Nicko Cruises (brand of Mystic Cruises). Next table shows the ports sequences of Nicko's Dorpen-visiting itinerary (12-day "Holland and Germany") between homeports Amsterdam and Berlin.
