MS Frederic Chopin Review

Review of MS Frederic Chopin

The MS Frederic Chopin cruise ship was built in 2002 in Tangermünde, Germany. The riverboat is owned by the Portuguese company Mystic Cruises (a family-owned financial holding) and operated under charter by its subsidiary Nicko Tours, a Stuttgart-based cruisetour company. MS Frederic Chopin operates cruises on the Elbe River, with departures from Berlin (Potsdam) and Prague year-round. The itineraries include sailing through the Elbe-Havel Canal (between Potsdam and Magdeburg).

Currently, the riverboat is time-chartered to the Switzerland-based brand Thurgau Travel, which operates her under the name “MS Thurgau Chopin,” while Nicko handles the cruise sales.

The vessel (ENI number 04801240) is Switzerland-flagged (MMSI 269057332) and registered in Basel.

Cabins

MS Frederic Chopin has a total of 42 cabins for 80 passengers. All standard cabins are outside, equal in size (12 m² / 130 ft²), and equipped with lower beds (two twins or one double), bedside tables, a wardrobe, a writing desk with chair, a small table with chair, and an en-suite bathroom (shower, WC, washbasin). Additional amenities include a hairdryer, HDTV (satellite reception), electronic safe (in the closet), intercom phone (onboard only), and centrally controlled air conditioning.

Main Deck cabins feature two lower beds (either two twins convertible to a double or one twin plus one sofabed), providing extra space during the day. Midship are two Deluxe cabins (13 m² / 140 ft²), each with a non-convertible double bed and two non-opening windows.

All Upper Deck cabins are French Balcony staterooms with floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening to a railing (false balcony). These cabins have either two lower beds (one twin and one sofabed) or one double bed (1.5 x 2 m) with two mattresses.

Aft on the Main and Upper Decks are the four Single cabins (two on each deck). Each single cabin (9 m² / 100 ft²) includes a sofabed and either a non-opening window (Main Deck) or a French Balcony (Upper Deck). These cabins can be booked without a single supplement fee.

Shipboard amenities

MS Frederic Chopin features a fore-located Dining Room Restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows, single-seating capacity, and an open seating arrangement. The Dining Room menu offers traditional regional dishes (inspired by visited destinations) as well as international cuisine specialties. Fine wines and gourmet delicacies complement the meals. The highlight of each voyage is the Gala Dinner, featuring an exquisite menu and an ice parade.

On the Upper Deck, the Lobby area houses the Reception Desk (24-hour guest service and assistance), Tour Office (for excursion information and bookings), and Gift Shop. A single staircase connects all decks. The ship does not have a wellness complex (Fitness, Spa, or Hair Salon), Library, Lift (passenger elevator), swimming pool, or Jacuzzi. The wheelhouse, all railings, and awnings are retractable to allow safe passage under low bridges.

The Sun Deck offers retractable awnings, creating shaded seating areas with four-seat tables and chairs, along with full bar service. Aft is the deck games area, featuring a Giant Chess Set and a Putting Green / Mini-Golf course. The midship section serves as a sunbathing area with loungers and deckchairs.

The cruise company offers optional shore excursions (not included in the cruise fare) in each visited port. These include sightseeing tours, city walks, cycling trips, and coach excursions to nearby attractions. All guided tours include complimentary portable audio headsets.

MS Frederic Chopin cruise fares include all onboard meals (breakfast buffet, waiter-served lunch and dinner, afternoon coffee and cake, midnight snacks), Welcome Cocktail Party, Welcome Dinner, Gala Dinner, onboard entertainment, ship tour, and port taxes. Fares do not include flights, transfers, excursions, insurance, gratuities, beverages, or personal expenses.
