MS Saxonia Review

Review of MS Saxonia

MS Saxonia was built in 2001 (christened in Hamburg, Germany in July), together with her sistership Swiss Ruby. The 90-passenger riverboat is owned by Scylla AG (via Scylla Cruises) and currently operates under charter for the German cruise tour companies Phoenix Reisen and Nicko Cruises (brand of Mystic Cruises).

The vessel is suitable for navigating almost all of Europe’s inland waterways thanks to her dimensions and shallow draft (1.2 m). She also meets all safety requirements for operating in coastal waters, which is why she is frequently deployed in northern Germany.

MS Saxonia river cruise ship

The vessel (ENI number 07001736) is Switzerland-flagged (MMSI 269057136) and registered in Basel. When chartered to Thurgau Travel (a Switzerland-based company/agency), the riverboat is rebranded as “Thurgau Saxonia”.

Cabins

All cabins on MS Saxonia are outside. Ruby Deck cabins feature a large opening panoramic window, while Emerald Deck cabins have two smaller non-opening windows. All accommodations come with twin beds (convertible sofa beds), a flat-screen TV, radio, electronic safe (in the closet), minibar, individually controlled air conditioning, and an en-suite bathroom (washbasin, shower, WC, hairdryer). Sofa beds allow the cabin to be converted into a comfortable lounge during the day.

Shipboard facilities

MS Saxonia is classically elegant and charming. Ruby Deck houses the lobby area (Reception Desk, reading areas with board games and books) and the show lounge, which features panoramic windows, a dance floor, and a full-service bar. On Emerald Deck are the main restaurant and the Boutique Shop.
