Dorpen (port locode DEDRP) is a an Ems River cruise port and town in Germany's Lower Saxony state (Emsland district) with population around 6,000. Dorpen is approx 18 km (11 mi) south of Papenburg (or at ~20 min drive distance via road B70). Dorpen is connected via highways to Emden-Bottrop (A31), Meppen-Papenburg (B70) and Oldenburg (B401). Hourly scheduled trains link to Munster-Emden.
The settlement was founded in the early 9th century. Current-day town's economy is heavily based on the paper producer UPM Nordland Papier GmbH (subsidiary of UPM-Kymmene Oyj - currently Europe's largest paper company) and shipping on Kustenkanal (Coastal Canal) as Dorpen Sluice is the canal's start/end point . Kustenkanal is an inland waterway with length 70 km (44 mi) that links the Dortmund–Ems Canal (length 269 km / 167 mi, between Dortmund and Emden) with the Hunte River (tributary of Weser River). Ems River has length around 371 km (230 mi), flows ~27 km (17 mi) northwest of Emden and empties into the North Sea.
In Dorpen is GVZ Emsland - Lower Saxony's largest freight logistics (trimodal distribution center) serving ships, trains and vehicles. By handled annual traffic, GVZ Emsland is ranked Germany's 6th biggest (out of 36 total).
