Dunkirk (Dunkerque) is an English Channel cruise and ferry port and city in northern France, with population around 90,000. The port is located approx 10 km (6 mi) from the France-Belgium border.
Dunkerque has France's 3rd largest harbour (after Le Havre-Paris and Marseille-Fos). City's economy is based on industries like steel, food processing, shipbuilding, oil-refining, chemicals. Main tourist attractions ar ethe museums Musee Portuaire (themed on the seaport) and Musee des Beaux-Arts (paintings and sculptures).
As ferry port, Dunkirk is served by the Danish company DFDS SEAWAYS with regularly scheduled daily crossings to Dover England. Currently, the Dunkirk-Dover route is served by the ships Delft Seaways, Dover Seaways and Dunkerque Seaways. City's public transportation was free only during weekends, but since September 2018 is provided free of charge every weekday.
Ferry travel is convenient as it is regular, fast and without any baggage restrictions. Adding the convenience to travel with your own vehicle, ferries are the perfect option for shopping vacations from UK to France. DFDS' English Channel crossings are day and night, with flexible tickets also available.
Dunkirk LNG import terminal was opened in January 2017 and serves LNG carriers. The LNG Terminal has annual capacity 13 billion m3 of LNG (liquefied natural gas) which is ~1/5 of France and Belgium’s LNG demand.
On January 8, 2020, at Port Dunkirk's Terminal des Flandres was inaugurated the shore-to-ship power facility. Shoreside power (aka "cold ironing") allows berthed vessels to be provided with electricity from the city's grid, instead of running their gensets (auxiliary diesel engines).
Dunkirk cruise terminal
Served exclusively by DFDS SEAWAYS ships, Dover to Dunkirk ferry route provides easy access to popular destinations in France, Belgium and Holland. The ferry company offers up to 24 daily departures, with crossing time 2 hours,
These crossings are often booked as short-breaks - day cruises for shopping or car travel vacations.
Dunkirk, signposted locally as Dunkerque, offers three practical ways to spend a cruise call: explore the compact town centre and historic harbour, visit the Operation Dynamo museum, or head to Malo-les-Bains for a beach and promenade walk.
Independent with some planning or transport. Sightseeing is straightforward once you reach town, with mostly flat walking and free local buses. The main complication is getting out of the working port and confirming the correct return arrangements.
Getting from the Cruise Port
Cruise ships dock in the commercial harbour; recent calls have used Quai Freycinet 12. This is separate from the DFDS ferry terminal at Loon-Plage. Your ship’s berth and designated passenger exit determine how you reach town, so follow the instructions issued for your particular call.
Use the ship’s transfer if provided, or arrange a taxi through the approved pickup point. Confirm whether a shuttle serves the town centre or only a port reception area, along with its return stop and last departure. Do not assume you can walk directly from the gangway through the docks.
Once outside the port, the DK’BUS public network is free to use and useful for travelling between central Dunkirk and Malo-les-Bains. Check the current route and return service; ordinary city buses should not be treated as a guaranteed connection to the cruise berth.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Town Centre and Maritime Harbour
Allow 2–3 hours after reaching town. Combine Place Jean Bart, Saint-Éloi Church and its separate belfry with the Town Hall and the waterfront around the Bassin du Commerce. This is the easiest independent option for a short call, with cafés and places to pause along the way.
The Maritime and Port Museum occupies a former warehouse on Quai de la Citadelle. Allow another 1–2 hours if visiting its exhibitions or historic ships, including the sailing ship Duchesse Anne. Check which vessels are open that day; boarding involves steps and confined spaces.
The Saint-Éloi Belfry offers a city and harbour viewpoint. A lift covers part of the ascent, but the panoramic terrace still requires 65 steps.
Dunkirk 1940 Museum and the Evacuation Beaches
Allow 2–3 hours, excluding your port transfer. The Dunkirk 1940–Operation Dynamo Museum in Bastion 32 is the most useful starting point for understanding the wartime evacuation. Plan roughly an hour inside, then continue towards the beach for a short waterfront walk.
From the Saint-Éloi area, allow approximately 20–30 minutes to walk to the museum. A local bus or taxi can reduce walking. Check seasonal opening dates before making this your main activity.
For the evacuation beaches, East Mole viewpoints and British Memorial together, a guided vehicle tour is more practical than trying to link the scattered sites on foot. The tourism office offers an approximately two-hour battlefield tour; confirm its meeting point and transport arrangements before booking.
Malo-les-Bains Beach and Promenade
Allow 2–3 hours at the seafront, plus transport. Take a free city bus or taxi to Malo-les-Bains for a broad sandy beach, a paved promenade and a café or lunch stop. This works well independently and can be combined with the wartime museum if your call allows.
The promenade is mostly flat and easier underfoot than the sand. For a simple outing, walk along the seafront for 30–45 minutes before turning back. Wind and rain can make the exposed coast uncomfortable; swimming depends on conditions and seasonal supervision.
Fort des Dunes
Allow around half a day including transport. At Leffrinckoucke, east of Dunkirk, Fort des Dunes combines military-history exhibitions with a fort partly concealed beneath the dunes. It suits passengers who prefer one substantial visit over several town-centre stops.
Independent travel is possible using local buses with a final walk, or a taxi with a prearranged return. Check opening dates and the route beforehand. Expect steps and uneven outdoor surfaces; adding a dune or beach walk makes the outing more demanding.
Self-Guided Walking Tour
Easy Town Centre and Harbour Loop
Start and finish: Place Jean Bart, reached from your actual shuttle drop-off or taxi stop. Distance: approximately 2 km (1.2 mi). Pure walking time: 30–40 minutes. Recommended total: 1.5–2.5 hours, excluding museum visits and the port transfer.
- Place Jean Bart: Begin at the statue and surrounding shopping streets.
- Saint-Éloi Church: Visit the church if open.
- Saint-Éloi Belfry: View the tower or add the optional terrace ascent.
- Town Hall: Continue to Place Charles Valentin for the building’s exterior.
- Leughenaer Tower: Walk to this harbour-side landmark at Place du Minck.
- Quai de la Citadelle: Follow the waterfront to the Maritime and Port Museum and historic ships, then return to Place Jean Bart.
The route is mostly flat, using pavements and quays, with road crossings and occasional uneven paving. Belfry and ship visits add stairs. Return to your confirmed pickup point rather than attempting to walk back through the commercial port.
Practical Tips
- Choose the town and harbour, or the museum and beach, as your main combination. Trying to include every attraction can leave little time for transfers.
- Check museum opening days, seasonal closures and last admission before leaving the ship.
- Carry a windproof layer for waterfront walks, even in mild weather.
- For independent outings, aim to reach the designated port pickup point at least an hour before all-aboard, allowing more time if another shuttle is needed to reach the gangway.
- Keep the ship’s local contact details and exact return location with you, and follow any earlier deadline specified by the cruise line.
