Erlangen is a Main River cruise port and city in Germany's Bavaria state (Urban district) with population around 110,000. The city lies north-west of Nuremberg, at the confluence of Regnitz River and its tributary Schwabach. It is connected with Main River via Bamberg.
Here are located the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, branch offices of Siemens AG, Max Planck Institute, the Fraunhofer Society (research Institute).
The University of Erlangen-Nuremberg has 5 faculties; with some departments in Nuremberg. It has almost 40,000 students, of which nearly half study in Erlangen. The universiti maintains its own botanical garden.
Bergkirchweih is an annual beer festival, similar to Oktoberfest held in Munich (though smaller in scale). This festival alone draws over 1 million visitors per year. The event takes place during the 12 days before and after Pentecost (t49 days after Easter). This period is called "5th season" by the locals. Beer is served in 1L (33 US ounces) stoneware jugs on wooden tables. The festival is held under the trees of "Berg", small and wooded hill with old beer cellars (caves) owned by local breweries. The caves extend for 21 km (14 mi) throughout the hill and maintain constant cool underground temperature.
Exploring Erlangen During a Cruise Call
Independent with some planning or transport. Erlangen’s compact center is easy to explore on foot once you reach it from the canal berth. The most practical visit combines the Huguenot quarter, Schlossplatz and the palace gardens, with time for a café or Franconian lunch. Nuremberg is a separate excursion requiring additional travel.
Getting from the Cruise Berth
River cruise vessels dock on the Main–Danube Canal, rather than beside Erlangen’s historic center. Hafen Erlangen accommodates cruise ships in a working port environment. Confirm your vessel’s exact berth, permitted pedestrian exit and return arrangements with reception before leaving.
A ship-arranged transfer, if offered, or a prearranged taxi is the simplest way into town. Ask for a central drop-off near Hugenottenplatz or Erlangen railway station. Do not assume that a shuttle operates or taxis wait beside the ship. Public transport requires checking the walking route to the appropriate stop and the current connections for your particular berth.
Save the ship’s precise location and contact number. A generic map pin for “Erlangen port” may not identify your passenger entrance.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Historic Center and Palace Gardens
Allow 2–3 hours in town for the Huguenot Church, the pedestrian streets around Schlossplatz and Marktplatz, and a stroll through the Schlossgarten. The palace houses university administration, so plan around its exterior and gardens rather than an assumed interior tour. This is the easiest independent option for a short call.
Botanical Garden and a Relaxed Lunch
The university’s Botanical Garden adjoins the Schlossgarten and makes a convenient addition without another transfer. Allow 30–60 minutes for the outdoor collections and, when open, the greenhouses. Check their separate opening times and any temporary closures. Combine the gardens with lunch around the central squares or Schiffstraße for a relaxed half-day ashore.
Old Town and City Museum
Continue north through Schiffstraße to the Altstädter Church and Martin-Luther-Platz. The nearby Stadtmuseum is a useful indoor option if its opening hours match your call; allow approximately an hour for a selective visit. The surrounding streets also suit a short wander without entering an attraction.
Nuremberg as a Separate Excursion
Organized excursion recommended for a short call. Nuremberg offers the Imperial Castle, Hauptmarkt and an extensive old town, but getting there and back consumes part of your sightseeing time. A cruise excursion or a prearranged direct transfer simplifies the journey. Independent rail travel requires first reaching Erlangen station, checking current services and allowing for the final transfer back to the berth. Choose Nuremberg instead of a substantial Erlangen visit.
Self-Guided Walking Tours

Before Returning to the Ship
- Confirm whether the vessel remains at the same berth while passengers are ashore; some canal itineraries involve a different meeting or reboarding point.
- Arrange the return journey before sightseeing, particularly if using a taxi.
- Aim to reach the berth at least 30 minutes before the stated all-aboard time, allowing additional contingency for traffic or public transport.
- For a brief stop, prioritize the central squares and gardens. Add a museum or another destination only after accounting for both transfers.
- Watch for bicycles when crossing cycle lanes and check garden access and attraction opening times for your visit date.
