Isle of Mull is the 2nd largest of Scotland's Inner Hebrides islands - after Skye. It is located off mainland Scotland's west coast and is part of the country's Bute and Argyll region. Mull island covers a total area of approx 875 km2 (338 mi2) ranking it Scotland's 4th and also the UK's 4th largest (surrounding Great Britain and excluding Ireland). Its population is around 3,000.
Mull Island's main ports (ferry and cruise) are Craignure, Fionnphort and Tobermory. During the summer months, Mull Island is visited by thousands of tourists. Most of its residents live in Tobermory - its capital city and home to the only single malt Scotch whisky distillery on the island named Tobermory (former Ledaig). After Tobermory is named a small town on Lake Huron (Tobermory ON) in Ontario Canada.
Until the 19th century, fishing, farming and burning seaweed for kelp ash were the island's main economic activities. Port Tobermory was established in 1788 by the British Fisheries Society. It was built as planned settlement supporting the local fishing industry.
In the mid 19th century, the potato famine and Highland Clearances reduced Mull's population by 2/3 and the local economy collapsed. In the early-20th century, the island had more sheep than people.
In 1964, the economy started to revive following the construction of Craignure Pier. Currently, the local economy is based mainly on tourism travel. Ecotourism is quite popular since the 1990s.
From mainland Scotland, passenger ferries link to Mull Island from Oban to Craignure (45 min travel), Kilchoan to Tobermory (35 min travel) and Lochaline to Fishnish (15 min crossing). Advance bookings are not required for Kilchoan or Fishnish ferries as access to both ferry terminals is through single-track roads.
Cruise ships usually dock at Tobermory or Fionnphort (southwestern coast).
