Raja Ampat Islands (the Four Kings) is an archipelago located off the northwest tip of Bird's Head Peninsula (New Guinea island, Indonesia's West Papua province). The archipelago covers a total area of approx 40,000 km2 (15,000 mi2 (land area 8034 km2 / 3102 mi2) and has a combined population of around 50,000.

Raja Ampat comprises 1500+ small islands, shoals and cays, surrounding the 4 main islands of Batanta, Misool, Salawati and Waigeo, and the smaller Kofiau Island. The archipelago is part of the Coral Triangle - a roughly triangular sea zone around Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste.

Raja Ampat Regency was separated from Sorong in 2004. Its land and sea area also contains Indonesia's largest marine national park, Cenderawasih Bay. It is part of the newly named province of West Papua (fka Irian Jaya). Raja Ampat is referred to as "The Crown Jewel" of the Bird's Head Seascape, also including Triton Bay and Cenderawasih Bay.

Raja Ampat is renowned for pristine coral reefs, limestone karsts, turquoise lagoons, and unmatched marine biodiversity. Most cruise visits are by expedition ships or luxury superyachts, with guests arriving via tender or embarking through Sorong or Waisai. Expedition vessels typically anchor offshore, and passengers are transferred ashore by Zodiac or tender boats. Landings are generally smooth but can depend on weather and sea conditions. Facilities are intentionally minimal, preserving the islands' untouched character.

Raja Ampat's scenery is marked by towering limestone islands rising from crystal-clear water, surrounded by white-sand beaches and dense tropical rainforest. Every direction offers postcard-worthy views.

The archipelago is popular for snorkeling or diving among some of the coral reefs, visiting the famous Piaynemo viewpoint (Fam Islands) for panoramic views, kayaking through lagoons and mangrove forests, watching marine life (manta rays, sea turtles, reef sharks, countless tropical fish), visits to Papuan villages to experience traditional culture, birdwatching (for the iconic Wilson's Bird-of-Paradise and Red Bird-of-Paradise).

Shopping opportunities are very limited. Small villages may sell handmade souvenirs, woven crafts, carvings, and local artwork, but there are no large shopping centers or duty-free stores.

Food can be purchased in local villages where fresh seafood and simple Indonesian dishes are occasionally offered. Generally, dining options ashore are limited.

Raja Ampat's uneven terrain, beaches, and tender operations can make access challenging for guests with mobility limitations.

"Edies Paradies 3", a documentary film by Otto C. Honegger, was broadcast by the largest Swiss TV broadcaster, Schweizer Fernsehen. It tells about the natural underwater beauty of Raja Ampat, which is likened to the only inhabited area of the region of about 50,000 residents and is considered like "Amazon" due to the underwater world found in the heart of the Coral Triangle of the world.

In March 2017, Noble Caledonia's ship Caledonian Sky got caught in low tide and ran aground in Raja Ampat's reef (CruiseMapper news). An evaluation team estimated that 1,600 m2 of the reef was destroyed, and it would likely result in a compensation claim of US$1,28M-$1,92M. A team of academics and environmentalists estimated much more substantial damage and potential losses to Indonesia at US$18.6 M. The recovery time for the reef would span decades.
