Saint-Malo is a port city in Brittany (northwestern France) located on the English Channel. The town has population around 45,000 (metro around 153,000) and covers a total area of approx 37 km2 (14 mi2). During the summer tourist season, the city's population increases up to 200,000.
Port St Malo (locode FRSML) has a dedicated ferry terminal serving regularly scheduled crossings (by BRITTANY FERRIES) connecting with Portsmouth (England UK). On most days there are also ferries to Weymouth and Poole (England) through Channel Islands (scheduled service by CONDOR FERRIES).
Gare de Saint-Malo is the city's main railway station, offering direct TGV (high-speed rail service) to Paris, Rennes and a few regional destinations. There is also bus service provided by Keolis. The city is served by Dinard-Pleurtuit-Saint-Malo Airport - located approx 5 km (3 mi) to the south.
St Malo is the most visited destination in Brittany. Sites of interest include: La Ville Intra-Muros (The walled city); The chateau of Saint-Malo (including the town museum); The Solidor Tower in Saint-Servan; The tomb of the writer Chateaubriand; The Petit Be; Saint-Malo Cathedral (The Cathedral of St. Vincent); La Demeure de Corsaire (The Privateer's House); The Great Aquarium Saint-Malo; The Pointe de la Varde, Natural Park; The Labyrinthe du Corsaire (attraction park); The City of Alet; Fort de la Conchee; Fort National.
In 2019, the cruise port handled 43 ship calls (35% increase over 2018) and around 20,000 passengers (~6,000 in 2018).
On cruise shore excursions/bus tours from St Malo are visited the picturesque towns Dinard and Dinan (to the south), as well as the tidal island Mont Saint-Michel that houses the grandeurs Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey (16th-century monastery/on the photo below).
Saint-Malo cruise terminal
Due to tidal restrictions, Port St Malo has vessel size limitation of max LOA length 255 m (738 ft) in the period April through October. The cruise port has max capacity 4 vessels simultaneously, of which 2 at dedicated berths and 2 at anchorages.
In 2019, the cruise port upgraded its infrastructure with a new pedestrian bridge (linking directly to the passenger terminal). At the terminal was introduced high-speed WiFi.
In early-October 2018 was proposed a project for Saint-Malo’s ferry (cruise) port modernization, with budget EUR 75 million. The plan is port's existing facilities to be upgraded into modern terminals with capacity to handle the increasing passenger (ferry and cruise ship) traffic. The project also includes building of new customs facilities.
The current aging ferry terminal facilities (inaugurated in 1978) will soon be unable to handle the newer and larger vessels deployed on regularly scheduled cross-channel routes. The small-sized facilities will soon force ferry companies and cruise lines with large-sized vessels to reduce their calls by 1/4.
If approved, construction works could start in 2021, with scheduled completion by 2024.
