Schoonhoven is a Lek River (Nederrijn-Rhine River) cruise port and town in South Holland province (western Netherlands)Part of Krimpenerwaard, municipality, the town has population around 5,000. The town is within 30-min drive from Rotterdam and Utrecht (N210 road) and from Gouda (N207 road). Regularly scheduled bus lines also connect to these cities. Amsterdam (Holland's capital) is at ~1-hour drive. Accross Lek River, a regular ferryboat service (for both passengers and vehicles) connects Schoonhoven to Gelkenes, from where can be accessed (within 30-min drive each) the river cruise ports Gorinchem, Dordrecht and Kinderdijk.

The settlement was established in early-13th-century after the Zevender castle was constructed on river's northern bank. The town received city rights in 1280 AD. City's stone walls and gates were built in mid-14th-century. The economy was based on shipping, trade (market town), brewing, agriculture. Since the 17th century, the town developed silversmithing (explaining the nickname Zilverstad / Silver Town). Related to this (still well-developed) industry are Het Nederlands Zilvermuseum and International Silver-Gold-Smithery School. The town is also popular for its handmade clocks.

As cruise port, Schoonhoven is visited by riverboats navigating the Dutch inland waterways. The largest river cruise companies with regularly scheduled visits to Schoonhoven are AmaWaterways (APT), Uniworld and Phoenix Reisen. As optional shore excursions, passengers are offered guided city tours and cycling trips through town's rural surroundings. This destination is also popular among the Dutch for short-breaks, bicycle tours, bird watching.
