Xiamen is a major port city on China's southeast coast. Part of Fujian province, the city covers an area of 1700 km2 (656 mi2) and has population over 3,5 million (metro over 5,1 million). The city has all 6 districts and urban population around 1,9 million. It borders with Quanzhou and Zhangzhou. Jinmen Islands are located less than 10 km (6 ml) away.
Being one of the world's major Hokkien-speaking cities and China's largest, Xiamen and the surrounding cities house vast communities of overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia: Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia's Riau Province. Xiamen was a treaty port during the 19th century and one of the 4 original Special Economic Zones opened to foreign traders and investments when China started its economic reforms in the early 1980s.
The city is known for its colonial architecture, mild climate, low pollution and Hoklo influence. In 2006, it was ranked China's 2nd "most suitable city for living". It has a well-developed economy, the most important industries being shipbuilding, commercial fishing, food processing, textiles, tanning, machine tool manufacturing, telecommunications, banking, financial services. Xiamen benefits greatly from incoming foreign capital, particularly from Macau, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
The city has excellent air, road, rail and seaport infrastructure.
Port Xiamen (locode CNXMN) is a huge deepwater seaport located on Xiamen Island's northern part. It features a large natural harbor, well connected to mainland China by rail and road. The seaport is one of China's busiest, in 2013 ranked among world's top 17 containership cargo ports. It serves mainly medium-sized and large container vessels, cruise liners and top-luxury yachts.
For 2016, the cruise port handled a total of 200,800 passengers (14.3% increase over 2015) via 79 ship calls. In 2017 were handled 77 ship calls. In 2018, their number grew to 90.
For 2024, the cruise port reported a total of 32 ship departures and estimated ~65,000 passengers.

In 2016, Xiamen International Cruise Terminal started a berth expansion project (completed in December 2018). The expanded wharf now has 3 berths and capacity to berth 1 largest cruise liner (Oasis-class, GT 225,000 tons) plus 2 medium-sized ships (up to GT 80,000 tons each) simultaneously.
The Port also built a new passenger terminal with capacity 6,000 passengers. The Xiamen Homeport project also included the building of new waterfront facilities - retail shops, entertainment venues, hotels, commercial zones.
