The peaceful setting of the beautiful port of Honfleur along the estuary of River Seine attracted many writers and artists over the years including French painter Boudin, English painter Bonington, French poet Charles Baudelaire and the members of Impressionist Painters. Throughout the history, numerous maritime voyages were initiated out of Honfleur. In the early 16th century, Paulmier de Gouenville sailed to Brazil from Honfleur and Jean Denis set out on an exploration of Saint Lawrence River. During the early part of the 17th century, Champlain set sail from Honfleur and discovered Quebec city. Later La Salle set sail on his trip down the Mississippi and named Louisiana after the King of France.
It is a place of great historic charm, especially around Vieux Bassin, where slate-and-timber fronted houses overlook the yacht and fishing harbour, and the cobbled streets recall 16th century Honfleur. Not to miss are a 15th century wooden church and Impressionist paintings of Musee Eugene Boudin. From there it's possible to visit Arromanches, Monet's Garden, Normandy Landing Beaches and Bayeux, home of world-famous Bayeux tapestry, pictorial works surviving from the Middle Ages.
