Portimao is a town and municipality located in the district of Faro, Algarve region of southern Portugal. In 2011 its population was 55,610 in an area of 182.06 km2 (70.29 ml2). It was formerly famous as Vila Nova de Portimao. It was incorporated as cidade in 1924 and became known merely as Portimao. Historically a shipbuilding and fishing centre, Portimao has developed into a tourist centre oriented along the beaches and southern coast. The most populous towns in Algarve are Portimao and Faro.
The community, founded on the right margin of Arade River, is oriented towards the sea and inserted in an area whose physical and geography characteristics justify seafaring economy. The maritime economy of Portimao allowed the development of industries that are oriented towards salination of fish, open-water fishing industry, canning and conservation, construction of vessels and transport. The Arade basin permitted commerce associated with cultivation of fig, almonds, carob and saw-milling/forestry industry, among others.
Being situated on Portugal's South coast, Portimao is well known in the sailing world as an ideal location for sailing on the Atlantic, boasting much calmer weather conditions and seas than the Western coastline.
Portimao is the host venue for a lot of prestigious sailing events, such as the annual Portimao, Portugal Match Cup event that is a part of the World Match Racing Tour. This special event draws the best sailing teams in the world to Portimao. The identical supplied boats (SM-40) are raced 2 at a time. Points count towards the World Match Race Tour as well as a place in season's final event. The overall winner takes the title ISAF World Match Racing Tour Champion. An ideal sport for spectators in Portimao is match racing.
