Getting from the Cruise Port

Large expedition ships normally anchor in Thunder Bay and tender passengers to the dock behind the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. Smaller vessels may use different arrangements, so follow the landing information provided onboard.

The Maritime Heritage Center is directly beside the usual tender dock. Central Alpena is approximately 1 km (0.6 mi) away and can be reached in about 15 minutes on foot using the riverfront paths and local streets. Golf-cart or shuttle assistance may be provided on some cruise visits, but it should not be assumed.

Taxis and ride-hailing services operate locally but may be limited when a ship is in port. Alpena also has a demand-responsive public bus service, although advance scheduling makes it less convenient for a short call.

Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center

This is the easiest and most relevant first stop. The visitor center explains the shipwrecks of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary through artifacts, interactive displays and a full-size recreation of a wooden Great Lakes schooner. Allow 60–90 minutes. Admission is normally free, but passengers should confirm operating hours for their visit.

Downtown and the Thunder Bay Riverfront

Allow 2–3 hours for the riverfront paths, downtown shops, public art and a meal or refreshment. The center is compact and mostly level, making this a practical independent option. The Maritime Heritage Trail includes boardwalk sections, interpretive panels and a pedestrian bridge near the visitor center.

Glass-Bottom Shipwreck Cruise

The Lady Michigan operates seasonal trips over shipwrecks in Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The boat departs behind the Maritime Heritage Center, making access particularly convenient from the usual tender landing. The cruise itself takes about two hours; add time for check-in and possible delays.

Advance booking is advisable because departures can sell out. Compare the tour schedule carefully with the ship’s all-aboard time, and remember that weather or marine conditions may affect operation.

Alpena Marina and Little Red Lighthouse

A walk to the city marina and breakwater provides open views across Thunder Bay. Alpena’s small red skeletal lighthouse can be viewed from the harbor area. Conditions on the exposed breakwater may be windy or slippery, so remain within public areas and turn back if access is restricted.

Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan

The museum combines regional history, art, science, a planetarium and outdoor historical structures. It is roughly 3 km (1.9 mi) from the usual tender landing. A taxi is more practical than walking when time is limited. Allow about 1–2 hours and check the day’s opening schedule, as the museum is normally closed on Sundays.

Self-Guided Walking Tours

Easy Maritime Center and Downtown Loop

Distance: approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi). Pure walking time: 35–45 minutes. Recommended total time: 2–3 hours. Difficulty: easy, mostly level, with paved paths, boardwalk and city sidewalks.

1. Begin at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center and explore its shipwreck exhibits.
2. Walk across the pedestrian bridge behind the center toward Rotary Island.
3. Follow the Thunder Bay River and its interpretive Maritime Heritage Trail.
4. Continue into downtown Alpena around Second Avenue and Chisholm Street.
5. Browse the shops, galleries and murals or stop for refreshments.
6. Pass through South Riverfront Park and return along the river toward the Maritime Heritage Center.

The route can be shortened easily, and the visitor center remains a convenient reference point for returning to the tender.

Moderate Riverfront, Downtown and Marina Walk

Distance: approximately 5 km (3.1 mi), depending on the waterfront sections used. Pure walking time: 70–90 minutes. Recommended total time: 3–4 hours. Difficulty: moderate because of the longer distance and exposed waterfront.

1. Start at the Maritime Heritage Center.
2. Follow the riverfront trail into central Alpena.
3. Explore downtown and South Riverfront Park.
4. Continue toward the city marina and harbor breakwater.
5. View the Little Red Lighthouse from a safe public position.
6. Return through downtown and follow the river back to the tender landing.

Allow additional time if stopping for lunch. In poor weather, use the shorter downtown loop instead of the exposed harbor section.

Beaches and Nature

Starlite Beach, Thomson’s Beach and Mich-e-ke-wis Park lie south of downtown along the Lake Huron shoreline. They are better reached by taxi unless passengers are comfortable with a longer walk. Lake water can remain cold even in summer, and beach conditions depend on wind and weather.

Rockport State Recreation Area is about 18 km (11.2 mi) north of Alpena and includes an abandoned limestone quarry, fossil-hunting areas, trails and a rugged Lake Huron shoreline. There is no convenient regular visitor transport, so use a prearranged vehicle or organized excursion. Wear sturdy footwear and expect basic facilities.

Excursions Beyond Alpena

Organized excursion recommended for the Presque Isle lighthouses, Rockport State Recreation Area and other regional nature sites. These attractions are dispersed along the coast, and waiting for an unreserved taxi could consume a significant part of the port call.

Regional lighthouse drives can combine coastal scenery with the Old and New Presque Isle lights, but seasonal opening arrangements vary. Cruise passengers should choose an excursion whose return time is coordinated with the ship.

• Carry a light waterproof layer; wind and weather can change quickly beside Lake Huron.
• Reserve limited-capacity boat trips or regional transport before arrival where possible.
• Confirm whether the ship is tendering and note the final tender time, not only the published departure time.
