As a tourist destination, the town is visited for the Chateau d'Auvers-sur-Oise (17th-century palace, 1635-built by Zanobi Lioni/an Italian financier associated with Marie de Medici). The estate overlooks the town (and the Oise Valley) and features a large manor house (plus other buildings), a huge park (courtyard with lavish terraced gardens and several ponds and fountains, and a farmyard.
In the following centuries, the estate changed ownership several times (1662, 1720, 1765, 1779, 1882) and its original architecture was changed/remodeled often. The estate was fully restored after the acquisition by the Conseil General du Val d'Oise (Departmental Council) in 1987.
In 1890, Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) painted the castle and its surroundings. The painting (Landscape with the Chateau of Auvers at Sunset) is currently displayed at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam Holland.
